Collapse Imminent
Junkscience.com, a division of tech central station, Exxon funded climate change skeptics, linked to this report:
http://www.junkscience.com/Greenhouse/heat_2006.pdf
It was a paper that was lauded as scientific evidence that global warming wasn't real and that the oceans were cooling. What they didn't say in the hype that referenced the paper, is that it was the upper oceans that were cooling.
Well, I was looking at the report and I noticed something interesting:
LOOK AT PAGE 11.
See the current outlined in the temperature delta? The deep current is diverging. Look from the cape of Africa to Australia. See the blue line?
A thermal inversion is in progress in the oceans. The cold surface water is too fresh to sink in the North Atlantic.
This was predicted by some oceanographers working in the 1990s. It is the signal for the MOC shutdown. The whole MOC will shut down in < 10 years.
Australia is already experiencing the air warming and ocean cooling that creates drought. This is the worst drought that Australia has had in over 1000 years.
It will be worldwide soon, with temperature gradients between pole and equator that are balanced solely by the convection of air. Moisture will be ripped out of the warm places and transferred to the cold places.
Happy Thanksgiving! |

Lyman, one of the authors told me:
"The upper 750 m of the ocean cooled by about 3 x 1022 J in 2 years. This is equivalent to a heat flux of about 0.48 pW, or a circulation change of 116 Sverdrup * degrees C. The difference in mean temperature above and below 750 m is about 7.7 degree C. That means that in order to achieve a sufficient downward heat flux, the circulation would have to change by 15 Sv, more or less instantaneously, and remain that way for 2+ years. 15 Sv is the same order as the mean magnitude of the overturning circulation itelf. "
Which would be true, if the flow mentioned transitioned between the two regions at one spot. The current is more than its flow at any one spot. It is the integral of its flow along its length, which is a mighty sum for the MOC. There are also eddies, which can nearly match the current in strength.
Some of the authors were (possibly mis)quoted as advocating the "steam kettle" theory. Which somehow suggested a heat transfer directly to space, bypassing our atmosphere, and the greenhouse effect of the intermediate steam.
As the OC register first put it (before reworking their propaganda piece) "when the oceans get too hot, they blow off a little steam"
Enjoy! |

Excellent posts Dave. Welcome aboard. I've been concerned about the ocean current for a while now. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

WOW
Hey thanks for joining Dave. Great thread. Very good information. It is very appreciated.
I had a post going about this problem somewhere. I'd have to dig it up. One of my usual rants. This is some very convincing evidence of what I was trying to say. I agree with the article that the ocean has 1000 times the temperature capacity then the atmosphere. Water holds so much more heat. It has more power to affect the climate and its the oceans that we should be watching and monitoring, not the ozone layer or hole.
They should take the warning labels off of everything and let stupidity sort itself out.
