Weakening Current

As was the case for most of the winter little or no north/south component to the gulf stream has been visible in the current velocities maps.

SEA CHANGE IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN?

Finally found somebody that admited there was a current change in the Atlantic ocean!!

Article by John Carey; Otis Port | Apr 26 '04

Quote From Source:

One worry about global warming is that the increased concentration of greenhouse gases will upset earth's balance and bring changes in ocean circulation. In an extreme case, scientists say, the flow of warm currents up the Atlantic Ocean to Europe might be shut down. That would cause temperatures to plunge in Western Europe. Such a shift may be unlikely, but anxious researchers have been keeping a keen watch for any variations in ocean flow, using satellites and instruments moored out in the sea.

Now, they are starting to spot some potentially worrisome changes. In the Apr. 15 online issue of Science, a NASA-University of Washington team reports that the counterclockwise circulation of surface water in the North Atlantic has become markedly weaker since the early 1990s. "These observations of rapid climate changes over one decade may merit some concern," the authors write. But they also caution that it's not yet clear if the shift in circulation is the result of man-made global warming or part of a natural cycle.

Bumping this thread so people can see what the current looked like in 2004 before the agency that provides the data changed how the data is reported. Their new system effectively hides the problem.

Quote From Source:
On December 11, a well-defined drain of southward moving warm water appeared, and persisted until December 19, when it began to close. By December 21, the stream appeared relatively normal, but the volume of the subsurface flow remains an open question.
Had this situation persisted for a month, it would have caused a major climate catastrophe in Europe, and if it became permanent, fundamental climate change that would lead to dramatically cooler weather across the whole continent. At present, extreme weather conditions exist from California to Poland, with unprecedented crop losses, a massive tree fall due to ice and wind, hundreds of deaths and property damage across twelve countries that could reach into the billions of dollars.
This is not being reported as a single connected event, but it may be, if there are more extensive changes in the planetary system of currents that have not yet been documented. The scenario is strikingly similar to the sequences described in Superstorm by Whitley Strieber and Art Bell, although the scale of the present event is obviously not as great as the one described in the book. But the currents have not yet failed completely.

I dont think we can get the truth anymore....Half the water buoys I click on are "Not reporting" any data.....WTF? No temps on the surface, the sea or the air. No salinity levels, no weather, no nothing. And I swear there were more buoys then what they have on their map as well. Either they need to shoot their programmer or figure out a better system or pull the government blocks off of them so we can see wtf is going on.

Well Wundergrounds is working but I dont see any water temps...just air temps. I want to look at that really hot spot in the pacific.

Dan... in all the year's I've watch that gulf stream velocity map I don't know I've ever seen that kind of a southward movement to it.

thats ever happened before. well, in recent times anyway.

*if* a week long change in the flow had *anything* to do with
the wicked weather in europe - what would a month long one do??

Right....I can hardly wait at this point. It's the only thing that is going to shut up the global warming people.

honestly - I recognize a continued warming as one possible future.
buuut - it all comes back to the Current failing or not.
and thats the bottom line - cause DanG says so.

It can only warm so much before the methane fields start to melt. Either we will turn into mars after that or we will wake up one morning 9 stories under snow.
