China region

Quote From Source:
BEIJING (Reuters) - An earthquake killed 14 people, injured nearly 400 and destroyed 8,500 homes in Jiangxi province in eastern China on Saturday morning, the official Xinhua agency reported.

Some 130,000 homes were damaged in the worst-hit Jiujiang and Ruicheng counties, while 420,000 people moved to safer areas. Emergency officials rushed tents to the zone to shelter the homeless and earthquake specialists flew down from Beijing.

The quake, which measured 5.7 on the Richter scale, hit at 8.49 am local time. It was followed around 20 minutes later by two aftershocks, Xinhua said.

Thousands left homeless in 5.5-magnitude earthquake

Quote From Source:
BEIJING, China (CNN) -- Thousands of people are sleeping in tents and open-air courtyards early Sunday after a moderate earthquake destroyed thousands of homes in eastern China, killing at least 17 people and injuring hundreds of others, according to Chinese officials and state-run media reports.

Relief operations continued through the night, as China's government rushed in 1,000 tents to house those left homeless by the temblor.

A 20-member team of seismologists from Beijing arrived in the quake-struck area to monitor the area for potential aftershocks.

China: 107 dead, 900 students buried in quake

Quote From Source:
BEIJING, China (CNN) -- At least 107 people died in a major earthquake that rocked central China on Monday -- but the total does not include any of the nearly 900 students feared buried in a collapsed high school.

China's official news agency Xinhua did not say if the buried students were believed to still be alive following the 7.8 magnitude quake.

Xinhua did not detail where the 107 deaths occured, although it reported earlier that four students were killed and 110 hurt when a middle school building collapsed in Juyuan Township of Dujiangyan City, about 60 miles (100 kilometers) southeast of the epicenter.

Toll from China quake estimated at 3,000 to 5,000

Quote From Source:
BEIJING - A massive earthquake struck central China on Monday and state media reported that as many as 5,000 people were killed in a single county while nearly 900 students were trapped under the rubble of their school.

The official Xinhua News Agency said 80 percent of the buildings had collapsed in Beichuan county in Sichuan province after the 7.8-magnitude quake.

Xinhua reported that 3,000 to 5,000 people had died in Beichuan, which has a population of 160,000, raising fears the overall death toll could increase sharply. Another 10,000 people were believed to be hurt.

I'm not sure I believe their numbers. I'm not sure if it will go up ...Its just..well China doesn't exactly care to share the whole truth. They also say 80% of the buildings were destroyed in one city...Beichuan. I'd have to say the toll will rise sharply over the next few days.

Quake death toll jumps past 8,500

Quote From Source:
The death toll quickly rose throughout the day. State-run news agency Xinhua said it had reached 8,533 in Sichuan Province by Monday night, and another 10,000 were believed to be injured.

It reported that authorities were yet to reach Wenchuan County -- which sits at the epicenter of the 7.8-magnitude earthquake with a population of about 112,000 -- because of damage to roads.

In Beichuan County, close to Wenchuan, the number of deaths was estimated at more than 3,000, with 80 percent of the buildings destroyed.

Quote From Source:
The earthquake also rattled buildings in Beijing, some 930 miles to the north, less than three months before the Chinese capital was expected to be full of hundreds of thousands of foreign visitors for the Summer Olympics.

Many Beijing office towers were evacuated, including the building housing the media offices for the organizers of the Olympics, which start in August. None of the Olympic venues was damaged.

“I've lived in Taipei and California and I've been through quakes before. This is the most I've ever felt,” said James McGregor, a business consultant who was inside the LG Towers in Beijing's business district. “The floor was moving underneath me.”

Death Toll From Chinese Earthquake Nears 12,000

Quote From Source:
CHENGDU, China, May 13 -- Soldiers, paramilitary police and civilian rescue workers struggled against rainstorms and fog Tuesday to reach thousands of people trapped under the rubble of schools, hospitals and homes collapsed by Monday's deadly earthquake in central China.

Another 2,000 people were found dead and 4,800 were missing in the little town of Mianzhu, near the quake's epicenter in Wenchuan county about 60 miles north of Chengdu, the official New China News Agency reported. The discovery brought to nearly 12,000 the number of people estimated killed by the strong tremor, which measured 7.9 on the Richter scale as it rolled through a half-dozen Chinese provinces and rattled buildings as far away as Vietnam.

Several mid-afternoon aftershocks jarred Chengdu, the Sichuan provincial capital, sending thousands of office workers and residents into the streets in a repeat of Monday's panic. Dozens of families were seen camping under red, white and blue tarps beside the Funan River in the city center.

More than 18,000 buried in one Chinese town

Quote From Source:
China says 18,645 people were buried under debris in the city of Mianyang, neighbouring Wenchuan county, the epicentre of Monday's devastating earthquake.

A strong aftershock rocked Chengdu, capital of Sichuan, on Tuesday afternoon, one of more than 1,950 over the past day and keeping nervous residents on edge.

An official from China's seismological bureau official said more strong aftershocks could still hit Sichuan, Xinhua said, as hotels in Chengdu told guests to stay on lower floors.

China quake death tolls soars by thousands

Quote From Source:
SICHUAN PROVINCE, China (CNN) -- China's death toll from a massive earthquake soared by several thousand Wednesday as rescue teams poured into the country's hardest-hit areas, state-run media reported.

The Xinhua news agency reported Wednesday that the death toll had risen to 14,866. An unofficial tally of deaths in individual communities -- as reported by the news agency over several days -- puts the toll at 19,565.

Xinhua also said nearly 26,000 people were still buried under debris and another 14,000 missing.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao headed to the quake's epicenter in Wenchuan county Wednesday afternoon, according to the Xinhua news agency.
