China says troops rush to plug dangerous cracks in dam

Quote From Source:
DUJIANGYAN, China (AP) - Chinese state media says troops are rushing to plug "extremely dangerous" cracks in a dam upriver from an earthquake-hit city.

Xinhua News Agency said Wednesday that 2,000 troops had been sent to work on the Zipingku Dam, upriver from Dujiangyan in Sichuan province.

Dujiangyan saw buildings collapse and services cut off in Monday's magnitude 7.9 quake earthquake.

China says quake toll could rise above 50,000

Quote From Source:
WENCHUAN, China (Reuters) - The death toll from China's massive earthquake could soar to more than 50,000, state media reported on Thursday, as rescuers struggled to help survivors and hope faded for the thousands buried under rubble.

Already some 20,000 are confirmed dead as a result of Monday's 7.9 magnitude quake and 25,000 remained buried in areas rescuers have struggled to reach, battling landslides, buckled roads, collapsed bridges and wet weather.

The Communist Party leadership told officials to "ensure social stability" in rescue efforts, as the quake spawned rumors of chemical spills, fears of dam bursts and scenes of collective desperation.

I'm thinking it will be double that. A 7.9 is a powerful quake and that country is heavily populated. They are going to have to rebuild some of those towns and cities. They were leveled.

I just hope things are settling with minor quakes. The last thing they need is another big one.

yes, they do seem to be getting smaller but the pattern remains,
also there are still a lot of 4.x and even 5.x's in the area.

Strong aftershock hits China quake epicenter

Quote From Source:
A strong aftershock sparked landslides Friday near the epicenter of this week's powerful earthquake, while some survivors were pulled from rubble after being buried for four days.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the latest tremor measured magnitude 5.5, one of the strongest among dozens that have shaken the area.

Flood panic

Quote From Source:
BEICHUAN, China (CNN) -- Thousands of Chinese earthquake victims and rescuers are fleeing areas near the epicenter over fears of floods from a river blocked by landslides.

The stampede of thousands of people on Saturday afternoon came as Chinese officials said the official death toll from the earthquake had risen to 28,881 people with 198,347 injured.

About 30,000 people live downstream, not including the many rescuers and others who were in the area because of the quake relief effort, he said.

Officials, worried that one or both of the lakes could burst, forced the evacuation of 10 villages and townships downriver, he said. One lake has an estimated 11 million cubic meters of water and the other has 1.5 million cubic meters.

The country's 1.3 billion population observed three minutes of silence exactly seven days after the tremor left an estimated 71,000 people dead or missing.

The horns of cars, trains and ships sounded with air raid sirens to mark the moment, at 6.28am GMT.

Make that 420,000 homes collapse and 80,000 people evacuated

Quote From Source:
Chinese state media say aftershocks toppled more than 420,000 houses Tuesday in China's quake zone, nearly two weeks after this month's devastating earthquake.

The official Xinhua news agency reports that the two temblors, 5.4 and 5.7 magnitude, struck in China's southwestern Sichuan and neighboring Shaanxi province.

Quote From Source:
BEICHUAN, China (AFP) — Chinese authorities were Wednesday engaged in an all-out evacuation effort as a dangerously swelling lake formed by this month's devastating earthquake threatened to engulf the area.

As the death toll from the May 12 quake jumped to 67,000, state press said that emergency workers had wanted to move the residents from their homes near the so-called "quake lake" by midnight (1600 GMT) Tuesday.

Around 70,000 people were earlier removed from Beichuan County as concern rose that the lake -- formed when the quake triggered landslides that blocked the Jian river -- could overflow and surge downstream.

Plan for quake 'warning system'
By Paul Rincon
Science reporter, BBC News

Nasa scientists have said they could be on the verge of a
breakthrough in their efforts to forecast earthquakes.

Researchers say they have found a close link between electrical
disturbances on the edge of our atmosphere and impending quakes on
the ground below.

Just such a signal was spotted in the days leading up to the recent
devastating event in China.

They have teamed up with experts in the UK to investigate a possible
space-based early warning system.

BEIJING (Reuters) - A strong earthquake rocked the western Chinese provinces of Sichuan and Gansu on Tuesday, near the site of May's devastating quake that killed at least 70,000 people, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the 6.0-magnitude quake, whose epicenter was 1,253 km (778 miles) southwest of Beijing. The magnitude of May's quake was 7.9.

A shallow quake of Tuesday's magnitude is capable of significant property damage.

The Olympic torch was paraded in the capital of earthquake-hit Sichuan province on Tuesday on its journey to Beijing, where the Games will open on Friday.
