Big quake rocks eastern Indonesia
HEY CNN ACTUALLY WROTE THIS ONE UP!!
| Quote From Source: | CNN) -- A strong earthquake early Saturday has jolted Indonesia's eastern Sulawesi region, an area located more than 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) from the region most devastated by last year's tsunami disaster.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude 6.5 quake struck about 65 kilometers (40 miles) west of Baubau on the coastal southeastern edge of the island of Sulawesi.
The quake could cause local damage and flooding, but nothing on the scale of the tsunami disaster, said Don Blakeman, a geophysicist with the USGS's National Earthquake Information Center.

Feb. 27 (Bloomberg) -- An aftershock with a magnitude of 6.7 struck Indonesia's Simeulue island off the coast of Sumatra, near the epicenter of December's massive earthquake, the U.S. Geological Survey said. There were no reports of damage.
The quake, the second-biggest aftershock since the Dec. 26 temblor and tsunami that left 290,000 people dead or missing in 12 countries, occurred at 7:56 p.m. yesterday, Jakarta time, about 1,590 kilometers (985 miles) from the Indonesian capital, the U.S. seismological agency said on its Web site. The temblor occurred at a depth of 30 kilometers.
The quake sparked panic among people in towns along the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia's Antara news agency reported, citing its own correspondent. People in Simeulue were still on higher ground as late as 2 a.m. today, fearing a tsunami, the report said. None was reported.

I completely agree. Though technically they are called that for 90 days I believe. From what I've seen in the past it seems as if you get the big event and the aftershocks that follow get progressively weaker and fewer and farther in between. This just doesn't seem to be the case here.

| Quote From Source: | The geologist who warned in July that Indonesia was due for a major quake says that only the northernmost portion of the boundary where the two tectonic plates meet ruptured in December. "The fact that most of the other part of the section has generated few great earthquakes in more than a hundred years is worrisome ... other parts within the section of this fault should be considered dangerous over the next few decades...I have no doubt that within the next centurywe'll have million-person losses, caused by natural disasters in the developing world. There will be hundreds of thousands more deaths in the next 10 to 15 years because of earthquakes alone."

Dan... have these settled down much at all over the past month or are they still coming very frequently? Remember in just under 2 weeks the quakes will no longer be technically considered aftershocks.

| Quote From Source: | A build-up of stress on faults in Sumatra following the Indonesian earthquake is likely to trigger another large quake and perhaps a tsunami.
That is the claim made in Nature by a team from the University of Ulster.
The slip that caused last year's devastating quake placed increased stress on the Sumatran fault and on the adjacent undersea Sunda Trench.
The 2004 earthquake occurred when the deep, flat Indian plate slipped under the Burma plate.

Seismologists: Another Sumatran quake likely
| Quote From Source: | LONDON, England (AP) -- A buildup of stress on faults in Sumatra is likely to trigger another large earthquake -- and potentially another tsunami -- in the Indian Ocean region, seismologists say.
Researchers at the University of Ulster-Coleraine in Northern Ireland report in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature that stress is building not only in the Sumatra fault, where the magnitude 9.0 quake struck December 26, but also on the adjacent fault zone known as the Sunda Trench, located under the sea west of Sumatra.
Another rupture could trigger a magnitude 7-7.5 quake on either fault. That would be a significant quake, but far less powerful than the one that unleashed a tsunami that left an estimated 300,000 people dead or missing.

Several Earthquakes Again Rattle Indonesia
| Quote From Source: | HONG KONG (AP) - Several earthquakes shook Indonesia over a 24-hour period, including two that rattled a region hit last week by a quake that killed more than 600 people, seismologists said Friday. No damage or injuries were immediately reported.
The first quake to jolt the area around Nias Island - devastated by the 8.7-magnitude quake on March 28 - struck late Thursday and had a magnitude of 5.6, said U.S. Geological Survey seismologists. The second quake of magnitude 5.0 happened about five hours later, the survey said.
A weaker quake was reported near Simeulue, an island group off the Sumatra's west coast that was also hit hard by the March 28 quake, the survey said. The tremor had a magnitude of 4.9, the survey said.
