Thin glaciers get thinner in Antarctica

Fri 24 September, 2004 18:02

By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Correspondent

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Some of Antarctica's glaciers are melting faster than snow can replace them, enough to raise sea levels measurably, scientists have reported.

Measurements of glaciers flowing into the Amundsen Sea, on the Pacific Ocean side of Antarctica, show they are melting much faster than in recent years and could break up.

And they contain more ice than was previously estimated, meaning they could raise sea level by more than predicted, the international team of researchers writes in the journal Science.

"The ... Amundsen Sea glaciers contain enough ice to raise sea level by 1.3 meters (4 feet)," the researchers wrote in their report on Friday.

West Antarctic glaciers speed up

Quote From Source:
Eventually the ice will make its way out into the ocean Many glaciers in West Antarctica have substantially increased their rate of shrinkage compared with the 1990s. US-Chilean teams report to the journal Science that the glaciers are losing 60% more ice into the Amundsen Sea than they accumulate from inland snowfall.

They say the ice loss corresponds to an annual sea-level rise of 0.2mm, or more than 10% of the total global increase of about 1.8mm per year.

The study incorporates satellite data and measurements from aircraft.

Interesting article:

http://www.co2science.org/journal/2002/v5n7c3.htm

Antarctic Ice: Is It Growing or Shrinking?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What was done
The authors used spatially-dense estimates of ice-flow velocity obtained from synthetic aperture radar to assess the mass balance of the Ross Ice Streams of West Antarctica.

Quote From Source:
What was learned
In the words of the authors, their results indicate that "contrary to earlier estimates, the mass balance of this sector of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet is positive." Instead of a previously assumed ice mass deficit of 20.9 gigatons per year, they found evidence for an ice mass accumulation of 26.8 gigatons per year. This build-up of ice was not the result of climate-driven changes in ice accumulation or melt, but was rather a consequence of internal ice stream dynamics, which seem to be slowing the flow rates of many of the ice streams. Ice Streams A and B, for example, have been decelerating at an average rate of 5 meters/year every year since 1974; while Ice Stream C completely stagnated fully 150 years ago and has been growing thicker ever since.

What it means
In the words of the authors, "the positive imbalance we observe and the trend toward a potentially larger imbalance are evocative of an ice sheet in advance rather than in retreat." Such an observation, if it continues to hold true, would be dramatic indeed; for the West Antarctic ice sheet has been retreating for several thousand years. Hence, as the scientists say, "if the current positive imbalance is not merely a part of decadal- or century-scale fluctuations, it represents a reversal of the long-term Holocene retreat."

Here is another article that deals with the cooling of Antarctica and the thickening of the antarctic ice.

I read your post about how the Antartic was having record cool temps this year....so I went ahead and posted those news clippings about how they are saying its melting.....

I'm so confused

That article was from January 23, 2002...

Here's one from today:
Scientists Report Increased Thinning Of West Antarctic Glaciers
"Glaciers in West Antarctica are shrinking at a rate substantially higher than observed in the 1990s. They are losing 60 percent more ice into the Amundsen Sea than they accumulate from inland snowfall."

And from two days ago:
Antarctic Glaciers Accelerating In Response To 2002 Ice Sheet Collapse
"Glaciers in Antarctica's most rapidly warming region have quickened their pace following the collapse of a Delaware-sized ice shelf in March 2002, according to a new study led by the
University of Colorado at Boulder and a related study by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory"

You have to be really careful about reports of Antarctic change. For example when it was first claimed that Antarctica was warming the scientists had used a very tiny select set of data. They used the most contaminated data they could find. They used only observation stations on the tiny Antarctic penninsula. This is the area furthest north and the area that is surrounded mostly by water. Thus the readings were heavily influenced by water temperatures. I for one do not believe this was an accident. Once scientists did proper research and included all observation stations it was found that the temperatures in Antarctica were cooling. And rapidly at that.

Keep an eye out for bogus melting reports. Watch for reports that discuss ice that has actually grown very far north and out over the open warmer waters. This ice is obviously out of its environment and will be subject to melting. I also think its ironic that rapidly growing sheets are because of warming and shirnking sheets are because of warming. See a problem there?

Hellmutt... the stories have enough holes to be compared to Swiss Cheese. The information they use misrepresents or completely ignores findings about the true state of the climate in Antarctica. It seems as if they are hanging on the old and very seriously flawed temperature study using only the penninsula temperatures. Also it ignores the data about thickening ice that had been previously reported. It pretends that never happened. Also it focuses again on ice over warm waters. This stuff will break up over warm waters.

If temperatures have been cooling since the mid 60's and you get reports like the one I posted in a different topic about the 2nd coldest month ever observed being experienced recently is seems the information that these "scientists" are putting together is illogical and most likely completely wrong.

A nice link with news on the subject.
Can we trust them?
Or is it like "Pravda"?
