Arctic Ice the Size of Florida Gone in a Week

Quote From Source:
An area of Arctic sea ice the size of Florida has melted away in just the last six days as melting at the top of the planet continues at a record rate.

2007 has already broken the record for the lowest amount of sea ice ever recorded, say scientists, smashing the old record set in 2005.

Scientists say the rate of melting in 2007 has been unprecedented, and veteran ice researchers worry the Arctic is on track to be completely ice-free much earlier than previous research and climate models have suggested.

I'll see your "record low ice extent in the Arctic" and raise you Record high ice extent in the Antarctic

Tell me. Why is the southern hempsphere ignored? They've had one of the harshest winters on record.

I'm not so sure things aren't completely in whack.

When it gets hot one place, it gets cold someplace else. Sounds about right to me.....

Northwest Passage was sucessully navigated in a wooden ship over 100 years ago. The brief opening of the NWP during summer is therefore not unprecedented....

Okay, great...it sounds like a lot of ice, but when did they start measuring volume in mi^2 ?

Now if they had an article saying 69,000 mi^3 melted...then THAT would be a story.

The melting of the Arctic is caused by soot. Particles of soot comes with the wind and covers the ice. The soot absorbs heat and creates a melting effect.

Solar radiation is a factor as well. Anyone who lives in the north knows how it works. You can melt off snow and ice even when the temperature is far below freezing. If you want to keep your snow pack you need fresh snow constantly. Without enough precipitation you will lose mass I don't care how cold it is.
