What is the forum's opinions on acidification of the ocean?

the seas are the largest CO2 sinks the planet has, and they are getting more and more acidic due to their role, how do you think this will effect climate change? Or is this byproduct of the change, only?

Industrial and auto pollution could turn Earth's oceans so acidic by the end of this century that the entire marine world will be threatened, a new report warns.

The study, issued today by the Royal Society in the U.K., documents the rise of carbon dioxide, or C02, which occurs naturally and is also emitted in the burning of fossil fuels like coal and gasoline.

"If CO2 from human activities continues to rise, the oceans will become so acidic by 2100 it could threaten marine life in ways we can't anticipate," said Ken Caldeira, co-author of the report.

"This report should sound the alarm bells around the world," said Chris Field, director of the Carnegie Department of Global Ecology. "It provides compelling evidence for the need for a thorough understanding of the implications of ocean acidification. It also strengthens the case for rapid progress on reducing CO2 emissions."

Caldeira is a staff scientist at the Carnegie Institution's Department of Global Ecology in Stanford, Calif. He did the research while at the federal government's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

First off take the author of the story and try to determine whether what he writes is credible or not. There is no evidence that industrial pollution or automobiles are causing the oceans to turn into acid baths. While they do absorb most of the CO2 there is the same amount of CO2 on this planet that has always been here. Nobody is making MORE CO2. Matter cannot be created or destroyed.

Unless aliens are bringing in more CO2 from other planets then we have the same amount that we started out with when this planet formed.

Also if you knew there were 1500 or more active volcanoes under the ocean right now erupting, and many larger than MT. St. Helens you would probably understand why the oceans are changing. They are getting warmer and things are changing. But the forces under the oceans are being ignored and humans are being blamed for political reasons. Do some research on undersea volcanoes. Would an erupting volcano effect the ocean more or a city full of cars? You may be surprised at just how many volcanoes are down there. Far more than we know of. More than 70% of the planet is covered in oceans and we have not even scratched the surface (or under the surface) of the this planets oceans. We know more about the moon and Mars than we do about our own oceans.

Dont believe everything you read in the paper. Research things for yourself as you are doing. Get to the truth. That is what science is all about. Remember that climate science is new ground based on how old the planet it is. Anybody can make predictions and form a hypothesis right now. Just because somebody says that is the way it is doesnt make it fact.

Humans used to think the gods were angry and eating the sun during Solar Eclipses. The world was flat at one time as well. They burned women at the stake during midevil times for witchcraft because the church told the masses they caused the black plague. Fear is real and very powerful. The human race needs to step up and beyond that and get to the facts before they start blaming things. It is observation time, not blaming time.

They should take the warning labels off of everything and let stupidity sort itself out.

Honestly until this post I had never heard of the acidification of the oceans.

Welcome aboard btw.
