Major ozone loss over Antarctic

Quote From Source:
New readings from the European satellite Envisat suggest that this year's southern hemisphere ozone hole may be one of the largest on record. The hole covers an area of 10 million sq km (four million sq miles) - approximately the same size as Europe.

It is expected to continue expanding for two to three weeks.

There have been signs over the last two years that damage to the ozone layer has reduced, but a full recovery is not expected until around 2050.

I'm not sure the repair thing is accurate. Just recently the hole was the largest ever observed. Doesn't sound like repair to me. But I've always suspected it wasn't really broken. Last I heard it is assumed that solar winds have wiped out the atmosphere on Venus. Who knows that increased or decreased solar activity could do. Look at the impact a big solar flare has. Since the atmosphere is also protected by the earth's magnetic field what happens as that field weakens as it is currently?

U.N. Says Ozone Layer Should Keep Healing

Quote From Source:
The hole in the ozone layer this year will probably be slightly smaller than the all-time largest of 2003, in line with the general trend of a gradual healing of the ozone layer's depletion, a U.N. agency said Friday.

"The size of this year's ozone hole is approaching an all-time high, but it will probably not break any records," said Geir Braathen, an ozone specialist at the World Meteorological Organization.

At present, the hole over Antarctica is about 27 million square kilometers (10 million square miles) and the WMO expects it to increase to about 28 million square kilometers (10.8 million square miles) _ a notch below its 2003 peak at about 29 million square kilometers (11.2 million square miles).
