The reason for the Gulf Stream disruptions
Sorry, it is 2 am and I can't sleep ... For the last 3 hours I've been digesting new information that I believe has not been made public yet.
Sorry this will be a such a big post ... but there are a lot of images.
We've all heard about how much fresh water has poured into the sea last couple of years from the Greenland melt. Well, it's finally effecting the Labrador Current and is now in the Atlantic.
ClimatePatrol.com - Glacial lake transformed to titanic torrent
As I've been reporting over the last 6 months the Gulf Stream has been disrupted by a huge cold water mass over Flemish Cap, South of Newfoundland. Now it's getting worse ... a lot worse.
ClimatePatrol.com - Gulf Stream slowing ... and cooling
Currently you can see from this image the black finger of ice-cold water extending down to the 43rd parallel.

Here is the reason: This is the extent of Sea Ice on the Labrador Current ... The blue is the deviation from normal. This is freshened water ... far less salty than normal sea water.

There are now dozens of major Icebergs and hundreds of smaller ones all the way to the 40th parallel ... floating in a stream of of freshened water.

The cold water of the Labrador Current is supposed to sink below the Gulf Stream as it drops off the Continental Shelf - creating the Atlantic thermohaline circulation. HOWEVER, this year the fresher, less dense water is staying on the surface, slowing the Gulf Stream and disrupting it as the two currents mix at the surface.

THIS IS NOT GOOD. AND IT'S ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE.

Previously it was thought it would take a lot more fresh water to do this ... now it appears that it takes very little.
Sound like a familiar movie? |

ruh roh - couple a slowdown of the Atlantic Current with a Solar Minimum... yeah this could be bad, very bad.
Super post.

well, on a related note, the drop in sea level will reveal something
else I've stated before, pre-historic sites.
Mankind *always* builds near water, and I have no doubt
we would find old settlements under water if we were to really look.

I really think you guys are reaching here.
Almost 100 years ago this month (April), the Titanic struck a massive iceberg at the 41st parallel off the coast of Newfoundland. Here are the coordinates where she now rests. 41 degrees, 46 minutes. About 1 degree south of the southernmost iceberg indicated on that map. Icebergs this farther south did not cause a gulf stream stoppage 100 years ago, and very likely won't today.
You guys really, really need to stop basing climate philosophy on bad sci-fi movies. Seriously. Please. |

I have my money on the Sun changing climate. This solar minimum thing outweighs everything I have been looking at.
They should take the warning labels off of everything and let stupidity sort itself out.

i agree fatal...i think the gulfstream is a bit overrated. there r much more powerful factors at work when global ice ages occur some of which cause the disruption of ocean currents. |

Agreed on the sun. If the climate takes a turn, the sun is doing the driving... |

I think you guys missed my point ... I don't care WHAT is causing the melting of Greenland or flow of the fresh water into the Atlantic.
Matt, of course I know there have been Icebergs below the 40 degree latitude ... that's not the point. I'm only concerned about ONE THING; disruption of the Gulf Stream.
These new images are now showing a contiguous, coherent river of 0 degree water flowing hundreds of miles south, and now curving west - on the surface. Clearly this indicates it's fresh water.
Now, if you think this won't matter, then we have nothing further to discuss. However, I believe you are wrong ... |

just take some of that extra salty water from the Dead Sea and that'll fix it. |
