Quote From Source:

A magnitude-5.4 earthquake has struck just east of Los Angeles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake's epicenter was about 2 miles southwest of Chino Hills and about 5 miles southeast of Diamond Bar, the USGS said. Chino Hills is about 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.

The center was about 7.6 miles deep. In general, earthquakes centered closer to the Earth's surface produce stronger shaking and can cause more damage than those further underground.

I have no idea how big of a deal this is for the LA area. I know if it happened where I live it would be all over the news for a day or two. 8" of snow is a lot where I live but when you live in the lake effect snow belt you don't even bat an eye.

Southern California earthquake takes out phones

Quote From Source:

The earthquake that hit Southern California on Tuesday disrupted phone service near its epicenter, Verizon Communications Inc. said.

Verizon spokesman Bill Kula said there were sporadic outages for landline phone service in and around the Pomona area, but no effect on wireless service.

AT&T Inc. spokesman Fletcher Cook said there was no known damage to the company's phone lines or cellular towers, but that both networks were experiencing congestion as many people were trying to call at the same time. In case of an emergency, he recommended repeatedly retrying a landline phone number, or using text messaging on a cell phone.

oh, no wonder my phone was behaving strangely.

Where I was at, in Orange (the city), the quake really only lasted about 10 seconds maximum. I also felt a few minor aftershocks two hours later...

Expert: L.A.'s quake a 'small sample' of one to come

Quote From Source:
LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- The magnitude 5.4 earthquake in Southern California on Tuesday caused no serious damage or injuries, but experts say it's a reminder that the "Big One" could happen at any time.
AutoZone manager Daniel Sanchez cleans up after the earthquake in Diamond Bar, California, on Tuesday.

"This earthquake reminds us to be prepared," California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said. "We were very fortunate that there were no serious injuries or property damage."

California has a 99 percent chance of experiencing a major earthquake within the next 30 years, according to a report by state and federal agencies.
