Above-average hurricane season predicted
| Quote From Source: | SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - A noted hurricane researcher predicted Wednesday that rising water temperatures in the Atlantic will bring a "well above average" storm season this year, including four major storms.
The updated forecast by William Gray's team at Colorado State University calls for 15 named storms in the Atlantic in 2008 and says there's a better than average chance that at least one major hurricane will hit the United States.
An average of 5.9 hurricanes form in the Atlantic each year.
"The Atlantic is a bit warmer than in the past couple of years," said Phil Klotzbach, a member of the forecast team. "That is something we would like to keep an eye on."

So ..just like last year I say watch the sun. If its active they may be right. If its not active...then I wouldn't worry too much.

Forecaster raises Atlantic hurricane number
| Quote From Source: | MIAMI (Reuters) - The noted Colorado State University hurricane research team on Wednesday raised the number of tropical storms and hurricanes it expects to form in the upcoming Atlantic storm season.

The team founded by forecasting pioneer Bill Gray increased its outlook by two tropical storms to 15, and by one hurricane to eight, compared with a long-term average of around 10 and six, respectively, for a storm season.
"Current oceanic and atmospheric trends indicate that we will likely have an active Atlantic basin hurricane season," said Gray in a statement.

I forgot to make a point of laughing at them the last two years. They have not been right yet.
And according to the sun....
We may be laughing at them again this year...somebody just needs to remind me.

We need to make note of this forecast and hold them to it. This is their forecast. Anything they do to it once the season starts is just BS. Lets see how accurate they are.

If I remember correctly, last year they revised it..the same with 2006. They kept coming out with revised "predictions". They have not been anymore accurate than the Coney Island fortune teller machine you put a quarter into to get a yes or no answer out of.
They should take the warning labels off of everything and let stupidity sort itself out.

Hurricane Forecaster Upgrades Hurricane Prediction
| Quote From Source: | Hurricane Forecaster Upgrades Hurricane Prediction
Prediction: 15 Named Storms
8 Hurricanes
4 Major Hurricanes
GRAND BAHAMA ISLAND (CBS4) ― Famed hurricane forecaster Dr. William Gray has released his updated Atlantic Hurricane Season and has upgraded the predictions released in December.
Phil Klotzbach, who has been the lead author on hurricane forecasts with Dr. Gray in recent years, said Wednesday that the 2008 season will be "very active" with 15 named storms, 8 hurricanes and 4 major hurricanes of category 3 or higher.
In December, Gray's group based at Colorado State University, forecast an above-normal season with 13 named storms, seven hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes. A hurricane is considered major when it reaches category 3 status or when winds reach 111 mph.

NOAA issues cautious hurricane forecast
| Quote From Source: | The upcoming Atlantic hurricane season has a 65% chance of being above normal, the agency says.
By Ken Kaye, South Florida Sun-Sentinel
May 23, 2008
TAMPA, FLA. -- The 2008 Atlantic hurricane season, which begins in nine days, looks likely to be fairly busy, with six to nine hurricanes, of which as many as five may swell into major storms, government forecasters said Thursday.
Conceding that such long-term outlooks can be off the mark, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for the first time hedged its bets when issuing a seasonal projection.
There is a 65% probability of an above-normal season, but also a 25% chance of a near-normal one, NOAA said.
The average six-month hurricane season has 11 named storms, including six hurricanes, two of them Category 3 or greater with sustained winds of more than 110 mph. For the coming six-month season, NOAA is predicting 12 to 16 named storms.

if i am correct, i believe william gray passed on the predicting duties a few years ago but for some reason, they still attach his name to it maybe for recognition. i could be wrong but i thought i read that somewhere. |

he's still there but has a side-kick, some young geek, I forget his name.
I don't pay much attention to their predictions anyway.
