New, Colder Weekend Freeze Looms for the Gulf Coast
| Quote From Source: | Another, potentially colder outbreak of arctic air will threaten the fruit and vegetable industry beginning this weekend in the South.
The upcoming outbreak will hit in southern Texas first Friday night, then it will expand eastward across the Gulf Coast into Florida later in the weekend.
Temperatures could drop into the teens and lower 20s for a number of hours in southern Louisiana. Approximately 40 percent of U.S. sugar production comes from from the state.
The new freeze will hit Texas and Louisiana first, then will reach into Florida.
AccuWeather.com Expert Agricultural Meteorologist Dale Mohler warns that temperatures this low could cause significant damage to Louisiana sugar cane. Record-challenging, wet weather this fall has also slowed the harvest.

Get Ready to Say "Brrrrr"
| Quote From Source: | Wind chill may drop below zero as coldest weather in 12 years hits North Texas
An Arctic cold front is pushed into the Metroplex early Thursday morning, bringing bitterly cold weather and light precipitation into North Texas.
On Thursday and Friday, temperatures are expected to be between 28 and 13 degrees and the wind chill could dip below zero. At 6 a.m., wind chills across DFW varied from 7 to 14 degrees. On Friday morning, wind chills have the potential to range from -1 to -9 degrees. A winter chill advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. Friday.
Drivers should drive carefully on bridges and overpasses, as thin layers of ice from light freezing drizzle have been reported across North Texas. The chances of seeing ice will be greater in the counties north of Dallas and Fort Worth, NBC DFW Chief Meteorologist David Finfrock said Wednesday night.
So far, more than 125 school districts have closed or delayed starts Thursday, including Frisco, Keller, Northwest and HEB. At this time, Arlington, Dallas and Fort Worth are all still open and on time.

Texas power usage sets another winter record
| Quote From Source: | Electricity usage in Texas rose Friday as arctic air covered most of the state, hitting another winter power record after setting one just the night before, according to initial data from the state grid operator.
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) said power use as of 8 a.m. CST (9 a.m. EST) reached 55,856 megawatts, surpassing the winter peak set Thursday evening of 52,001 MW and the previous record of 50,408 MW in February 2007.
ERCOT reported no major power problems.
Temperatures across Texas are running about 15 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit below normal, according to DTN Meteorlogix.
Power demand is expected to remain above 50,000 MW for several hours Friday morning and again Friday evening, according to ERCOT's daily forecast. The high temperatures for many cities will not rise above 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 Celsius), it predicted.
