Bird flu

I think its time to start monitoring this, because this could end up killing millions. So I start this thread with bad news that the virus has spread outside of Asia and is infecting humans at an alarming rate. With climate change comes diseases. Last time during the Mid Evil times it was the "Black Death" or bubonic plague...during the last mini ice age.

Turkish deaths put Europe on bird flu alert

Jonathan Leake and Gareth Jenkins

Quote From Source:
THE number of Turkish people thought to be infected with avian flu rose to more than 50 this weekend, prompting concern that the disease may be about to spread into Europe.

Yesterday a British laboratory confirmed that a Turkish brother and sister who died last week had the feared H5N1 strain of avian flu.

A third child from the same family in Dogubayazit, in eastern Turkey, has now died of avian flu and dozens more suspected cases have emerged.

Iran acts to avert spread of bird flu from Turkey

Quote From Source:
Iran closed a border crossing with Turkey on Sunday and senior Russian health officials advised holidaymakers against visiting the country as the bird flu virus spread to the outskirts of the capital Ankara.

The Turkish health ministry said two children and an adult from near the city, as well as two people in the eastern city of Van, had tested positive for the H5N1 strain of bird flu.

The three cases in Ankara were announced only hours after authorities in the capital set up bird flu centres at two hospitals.

WHO: Two new China bird flu deaths

Quote From Source:
BEIJING, China (AP) -- Two people who had been sickened by bird flu in China have died, the World Health Organization has said, bringing the total number of people killed by the disease on the mainland to five.

A 10-year-old girl from Guangxi province in the south and a 35-year-old man from Jiangxi province in the east died last month from complications from the disease, said Roy Wadia, a spokesman for the WHO in Beijing.

"We've seen that happening in other cases as well, so it's not surprising," Wadia said on Wednesday.

Bird flu 'spiralling out of control'

IAN JOHNSTON - SCIENCE CORRESPONDENT

Quote From Source:
THE deadly bird flu virus may be getting more effective at infecting humans, the World Health Organisation believes, as experts warned that the disease was spiralling out of control among poultry in Turkey and posed "a serious threat" to neighbouring countries.

With 15 cases confirmed in humans in Turkey in the past week - compared with 140 in five years in the Far East - concern is growing that the disease may be evolving quickly.

The speed of the outbreak's spread prompted governments across Europe yesterday to guard against the disease.

Asia must prepare to control a bird flu pandemic

Quote From Source:
Asia must do more to prepare for quick action in case a pandemic flu strain erupts because every moment will count at the onset and rapid response will be crucial, the World Health Organisation said today.

The current strain remains difficult for humans to catch, but health officials fear it could mutate into a form that spreads easily from person to person, possibly triggering a global pandemic that kills millions. So far, most human bird flu cases have been traced to contact with infected birds.

Avian influenza – situation in Turkey - update 4

Sequencing of human virus

Quote From Source:
Virus from one of the patients shows mutations at the receptor-binding site. One of the mutations has been seen previously in viruses isolated from a small outbreak in Hong Kong in 2003 (two cases, one of which was fatal) and from the 2005 outbreak in Viet Nam. Research has indicated that the Hong Kong 2003 viruses bind preferentially to human cell receptors more so than to avian cell receptors. Researchers at the Mill Hill laboratory anticipate that the Turkish virus will also have this characteristic.

Turkey's Bird Flu Virus May Be More Infectious Strain

Quote From Source:
The finding increases the need to control outbreaks of H5N1, which risks mutating into a form that's easily spread among people. Such a virus could touch off a pandemic similar to the one that killed as many as 50 million people in 1918. The WHO warned that governments may have no more than three weeks to put plans in place to lessen the impact of a pandemic.

Quote From Source:
(CNN) -- China has recorded its sixth death from the avian flu virus, according to a report on the Chinese Health Ministry's Web site.

The victim was a 35-year old woman from Jianyang in Sichuan province who slaughtered poultry. She was the ninth person in the country to contract bird flu.

The woman fell ill on January 3, the report said, was hospitalized on January 10 and died the next day.

Firms at bird flu summit are urged to plan for the worst

The World Health Organisation says that the threat is imminent and we must all prepare....

Quote From Source:
Contingency planning has become common at financial firms since the September 11 attacks in 2001 brought Wall Street to a halt and depressed world markets for months. The Financial Services Authority, the City regulator, is including bird flu in its risk assessment for 2006, to be published on Wednesday. The government recommends firms establish minimum staffing levels and identify essential workers.

HSBC, the banking giant, is devising ways of operating with half its staff. They could be asked to work from home or via video link and teleconference facilities.

Doing nothing is no longer an option. The Sars virus may have turned out to be a near miss with just 8,000 cases and 774 deaths worldwide. But bird flu is being seen as a different matter. The WHO's director-general, Lee Jong-wook, warned that an outbreak in Britain was "inevitable and possibly imminent".

WHO Says Possible Bird Flu Pandemic Not Exaggerated

Quote From Source:
The Director-General of the World Health Organization, says the risk of an avian influenza pandemic is real and not exaggerated. Dr. Lee told delegates attending a week-long conference that the threat must be taken seriously and action to prevent a pandemic from occurring must be intensified.

WHO Director-General, Lee Jong-Wook, rebuffs suggestions that the World Health Organization is exaggerating the risk of a bird flu pandemic that could potentially kill millions of people around the world.

"Concern has been expressed that we are overplaying this threat. We are not. We can only reduce the devastating human and economic impact of a pandemic if we all take the threat seriously now and prepare thoroughly. This is a global problem," he said.

Scientists identify bird flu genes, genomes

Quote From Source:
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Scientists who have made a big leap in unraveling the genetic code of bird flu viruses along the way found a new clue that may help explain why the notorious H5N1 strain is so deadly.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, is home to a remarkable viral library, samples of about 11,000 influenza viruses that Dr. Robert Webster has gathered from around the world since 1976. They're not just flu viruses that have infected people over the years, but ones from pigs and other animals - including about 7,000 bird flu viruses, gathered from poultry, ducks, gulls and other flocks.

Thursday, St. Jude researchers reported in the journal Science that they have completed the first large genetic analysis of more than 300 of these bird flu viruses. They identified 2,196 bird flu genes and 160 complete genomes, doubling the amount of genetic information available for scientists to study how these viruses evolve and spread over time.

Eastern European avian flu similar to 1918 strain

Quote From Source:
More similarities have been found between the bird flu creeping into Eastern Europe and the 1918 Spanish flu that decimated populations worldwide, including the discovery of an entirely new way bird flu may kill human cells.

Researchers from St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., have found that bird flu viruses carry a gene that can latch onto many crucial proteins inside human cells, presumably disrupting their function and causing far more severe disease than human viruses.

The research provides a new hypothesis for why certain bird flu viruses are particularly lethal for humans.

Bird flu 'could be 21st-century Black Death'

Quote From Source:

- Economists predict rioting and flight from cities
- Markets not prepared for risks occurring together

Avian flu has the potential to develop into a global pandemic that would be as devastating as the Black Death of the 14th century, the World Economic Forum warned yesterday in its assessment of the risks threatening stability and prosperity.

In a worst-case outcome, experts charged with weighing up systemic dangers said there might be riots to gain access to supplies of vaccines, a collapse of public order, a partial flight from the cities and large-scale migration...

In First Iraqi Case, Bird Flu Kills Girl in North

Quote From Source:
A 15-year-old Iraqi girl has died of bird flu, Iraqi and international health officials said yesterday, indicating the arrival of the disease in another country - one that, in its war-torn state, may be ill prepared to control its spread.

The finding suggests that the virus may be spreading widely - and undetected - among birds in Central Asia, which is poorly equipped to identify and report infections, officials said. Avian flu has not previously been reported in Iraq.

As in Turkey earlier this month, the spread of the A(H5N1) strain of bird flu to a new part of the world became evident only through a human death. Bird flu rarely infects humans, and usually does so late in the course of an animal outbreak, after the patient has had close contact with sick birds.

Bird disease in flu-hit Nigeria "spreading like wildfire"

Quote From Source:
As Nigeria scrambled to deal with Africa's first confirmed case of deadly bird flu, a farmer's representative said thousands of poultry had died of disease further north.

Identified earlier this week as "fowl cholera", the disease was spreading rapidly through farms in Kano State, killing tens of thousands of chickens, Auwalu Haruna, secretary of the Kano State poultry farmers' association, said.

Nigeria announced Wednesday that Africa's first confirmed case of the H5N1 strain of bird flu -- which can be fatal to humans -- had been found in Sambawa Farm in Kaduna State, 300 kilometres (185 miles) north of Abuja.

Bird flu reaches India and France, death toll at 93

Quote From Source:
MUMBAI/PARIS (Reuters) - Big poultry producers India and France confirmed their first cases of H5N1 bird flu on Saturday as the deadly disease continued its geographical spread from Asia.

India's federal government said eight people were being checked for H5N1 in the western state of Maharashtra, where about 50,000 birds have died in the last few days.

"Yes, it is confirmed. The disease is H5N1. It has come to Maharashtra," state animal husbandry minister Anees Ahmed told Reuters. "We are treating it as an emergency."

Bird Flu Hits Seventh EU Nation

Quote From Source:
Tests confirmed H5N1 in three birds found dead in Hungary, making the country the seventh EU nation with an outbreak of the deadly strain of bird flu, officials said Tuesday.

Austria, Germany, Greece, Italy, France and Slovenia also are grappling with H5N1 in wild birds, the European Commission said Tuesday. So far, no EU nations have reported bird flu in commercial stocks or in humans.

Some countries, including France and the Netherlands, are pushing for flu vaccines for domestic poultry. But others, including Britain, say vaccinations are costly and difficult _ and provide no guarantee of immunity since the drugs only ward against the flu in general, not H5N1.
