Indonesia refuses again to share bird flu samples

This is ridiculous. Indonesia is demanding intellectual rights to the gene sequence of their H5N1 strains. I really think it's important for independent people to track mutations in the virus, especially ones that would make it spread easily. Indonesia tried this before, and it turned out several samples had an altered receptor binding domain, which made it easier to spread among humans.

IIRC China did the same thing earlier this year. I think their afraid of the bag the cat's let out of. I wish they wouldn't view it that way. THE mutation, if it ever happens, could spontaneously happen anywhere in the world.

BTW, I hope it's OK to post something like this. I'm not trying to spam/overrun the board. I just think H5N1 is a huge danger, and the governments are running around trying to cover everything up, so the next pandemic isn't called the Indonesian Flu or whatever. I think it's crazy. Here's something that could kill millions to hundreds of millions of people, and we're worried about our image. We did it two summers ago here, we tried everything to hide an upswing in H5 cases in wild birds. Don't want to cause alarm.

Wow they have subscribed to the American way of doing business. They are putting profit before all else. It is a serious shame that anyone could hold another person's life for ransom. This is what this amounts to.
