Australians told to stockpile 10 weeks' supply of food
| Quote From Source: | EVERY Australian household should stockpile at least 10 weeks' worth of food rations to prepare for a deadly flu pandemic, a panel of leading nutritionists has warned.
World health experts now agree a pandemic is inevitable and will spread rapidly, wiping out up to 7.4 million people globally and triggering rapid food shortages.
Australia is expected to be among the first countries hit because of its proximity to Asia and high levels of international traffic.
But Woolworths and Coles, the nation's two major supermarket chains, will run out of stock within two to four weeks without a supply chain – or even faster if shoppers panic.
This has prompted a team of leading nutritionists and dietitians from the University of Sydney to compile "food lifeboat" guidelines to cover people's nutritional needs for at least 10 weeks.
Their advice – published in the Medical Journal of Australia – would allow citizens to stay inside their homes and avoid contact with infected people until a vaccine becomes available.

I love how they throw those numbers out. Something akin to the 1918 flu would kill a few hundred million people. |

It's a good idea to stock pile food though. I like the rice and beans idea you mentioned a while back. 50 lbs of rice + 50 lbs of beans is fairly cheap and would last 1 person a very long time. |

Well, I could see getting sick of it. You could always get a mix of other grains and legumes for variety. |

If you keep unrefined grains and beans you can sprout them, giving you some fresh vegetables in your diet. |

I'm thinking 50lbs of nachos and 50 cases of beer. That should do the trick

your house is gonna smell after eating 10 weeks of beans and rice. Could be a good way to generate power though by burning the methane. |

Deadly flu pandemic huh. I'll wait for the bird flu and SARS to take off. They should be stocking water....
They should take the warning labels off of everything and let stupidity sort itself out.

H5N1 is a much bigger risk than SARS, although SARS did go airborne - http://www.sciencedaily.com/...ses/2005/03/050325200120.htm
SARS was the long incubation period, so quarantine worked.
I'm not personally writing H5N1 off yet. |

What I think is sad that if asked to do that in America most Americans would have to fall short of plans. I doubt most of us here in this country can afford to stockpile 10 weeks worth of food. Hell many can't even stockpile a week of food.

Most people in this country could afford to pile up on rice and beans if they tried. |

Right. Because you actually have to work a tiny bit to prepare it. You can't just pop it in a microwave or say "can I get that supersized?"

It's sad that some people won't even try and cook. I love cooking my food. |
