UN speach signals the end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it

Shortages of staples such as rice threaten to fuel civil unrest, said Ban, who also wants an end to farm subsidies, agricultural taxes and export bans.
A 60 percent increase in food prices since the beginning of 2007 has sparked riots in more than 30 countries -- including Cameroon and Egypt -- that depend on imported food. The wealthiest nations pledged $6.3 billion in emergency aid last year, yet critics say that will do little unless accompanied by policies that promote greater output.

As most of you already know, there IS no way to increase production 50%. Rising oil prices, climate change (warmer or colder), and political-economic global instability will decrease production, not increase it (even here in the US). Ban Ki-Moon knows this. So what is he saying? Translation: He is sending up the storm warning flag, announcing that there will not be enough food ... and to prepare for the end. And he predicts that end will be by 2030.
Funny thing is most Peak Oil doom sayers have been saying the same thing for the last decade.
Folks, the population bomb has left the bomb bay and is now falling. This planet will never make it to ten billion people ... it won't even make it to eight.
I'm not a survivalist ... but it's time we start thinking about creating sustainable micro-communities amongst ourselves . Time is going to run out real fast for those of us who can see this coming.
In fact we may only have about 5 years before things get really ugly ...

I agree with sustainable microclimates. All major developments should have a food production component to cut down on the transportation associated with food.
The worrying thing here is that I can see governments relaxing their genetically modified food controls (those that have them). I certainly don't want to eat that stuff. |
