Yes indeed. But they're all CYCLE 23 spots, not cycle 24. This cycle is like the Energizer bunny. Going, and going, and going.....

This is actually good news for those of us wanting a very long cycle 23.

They are on the equator. When the cycle changes, the new spots first appear at high latitudes. As the cycle progresses, the spots slowly migrate toward the equator. All these spots are on the equator, meaning they are all associated with the old cycle. There has been 1 high latitude spot in early January, and that's it.

Remember the movie Ice? The idea in that movie was that the planet plunged immediately into an ice age because something like a quarter of the sun was covered with sun spots. Talk about having it completely backwards huh?

Quote From Source:
"What's going on? We have two solar cycles active at the same time. Solar Cycle 24 has begun, but Solar Cycle 23 has not ended. This is perfectly normal. Around the time of solar minimum--i.e., now--old-cycle spots and new-cycle spots frequently intermingle. Eventually Cycle 23 will fade to zero, but not yet."

Very strange. I guess this means we are having sun spots of two different polarities going on at the same time basically?

Not strange at all Indy. There is ALWAYS overlap of the cycles. The official changeover is when the number of spots of the new cycle outnumber the spots from the old cycle. Clearly, we aren't remotely close to that yet, as all the current spots are cycle 23 spots.

The reversed polarity spots are usually just a signal that the new cycle is going to start producing spots soon. So far there have been 2 of those. One in July 2006, and another in January 2008. The one from 2006 is apparently debatable, as it only lasted a few hours. Then again, the one from this January didn't last much longer.

Bottom line: weird shit we've never seen before is happening with the sun.

I wonder what this will do to Zebra's forecast for the summer and coming winter......

Perhaps he'll have to recalculate.

Funny how Al Gore pretty much disappeared until the sun started spiking again...now he's calling us all idiots...
