April 2008 Sunspot Number Extremely Low
There has been a concern among many of us that reduced solar activity could be bad for this upcoming winter given the state of this most recent winter and the low sunspot numbers for 2007.
Unfortunately 2008 is starting off as bad as 2007. In the last 10 months the international sunspot number has hit 10 only one time (10.1 in December of 2007). April of 2008 saw a dismal sunspot number of 2.9. The current solar minimum was supposed to have ended quite some time ago. There appears no end in sight as the sun is currently spot free.
If we don't see a recovery in the next three months I think the winter of 2008-2009 could prove to be worse than this last one. That is the last thing we need with the PDO shifting into a cold phase.
