I am renaming this thread for the current quiet period. No sense in starting a thread on the exact same subject.

We are nowhere close to a record. Back in the 1820's it looks as if there were 4 months in a row without spots.

What was that winter like?

Wow 38 days and counting with no sunspots. BTW has anyone noticed how the predicted sunspots on DXLC goes down? Last month the original forecast was for something like 8.4. That missed. The site now says it predicted 5.4 which isn't true. This month it started out in the 8's again. Now the predicted is down to 6.6.

It is like they have studied midwest snow forecasts. Anyone that lives in the area knows what I mean. You know that day before the storm forecast of 8" that is changed to 6" the day of the storm and during the storm they lower it to 4" so when the total is 3.8 to 4.2" they can say they nailed the forecast.

I wonder if NASA thinks this minimum is exceptional yet?

Probably not...at least that's what they'd say publicly.

"The rain it raineth every day, and every night also -- week in and week out, from the rising of the sun to the going down of the same, there is nothing but rain, rain, rain, 'The windows of heaven are opened up.' Given who seems to run the media circus there (Hansen) you are probably right.

If today holds up and there isn't a sunspot (provided the running total of 0.0 is correct) this will be the first solar goose egg since 1913. Yes. There hasn't been a 0.0 sunspot number for a given month since June of 1913. The only drought longer involves a baseball team from Chicago :-)

If we manage to put up another 0.0 in September it would be the lowest 3 month running total since 1823. I'm not banking on that happening. Just wanted to put that out there.

Stop the presses!

Seems they've gone back and declared a numberless speck from the 21st was actually a spot.

See more here.

That may have been what they thought was a spot but turned out to be the space station. We'll find out for sure in a day or two.

No, it was this speck on Aug 21-22.

The Sun made Drudge Report lol

Quote:
Sun Makes History: First Spotless Month in a Century

Drop in solar activity has potential effect for climate on earth.

The sun has reached a milestone not seen for nearly 100 years: an entire month has passed without a single visible sunspot being noted.

The event is significant as many climatologists now believe solar magnetic activity – which determines the number of sunspots -- is an influencing factor for climate on earth.

According to data from Mount Wilson Observatory, UCLA, more than an entire month has passed without a spot. The last time such an event occurred was June of 1913. Sunspot data has been collected since 1749.

Remember this quote? The end of the month forecast for August was 5.7. This isn't snow guys. You don't get to keep changing the forecast until the very end.

Forecast for September is set at 6.7 to start the month. Lets see how that changes.

Based on the mysterious sun speck from August we are at 17 days in a row now without a spot.

A sunspot without a spot? I've been watching DXLC daily. Checked it twice yesterday and just now. We've picked up a 0.4 for the month without having a spot listed on the map. Another phantom spot?

There's a new spot. It's a cycle 24 spot too.

So that would be the first cycle 24 spot since winter.

Yup, that doesn't make the current solar activity any less concerning. 24 spots were due sooner or later. It doesn't mean cycle 24 will be any more or less active.

This is the 2nd spot for the 24 cycle. Next spot could be a 23 again.
