2008 Honda Civic GX

I was looking around at cars to replace what looks like a certain dead version of my car. I was looking around for cars that get the best mileage. The Yaris was the most affordable higher mileage car. The highest mileage cars are the Toyota Prius and the Honda Civic Hybrid. Fully loaded you are looking at about $27k for the Civic and $29k for the Prius. These cars cost less than half as much to fuel per year than lets say something like one of my favorite cars the Nissan Maxima. The fuel savings for the Prius over the Maxima for the life of a 5 year car loan was over $7,000.

Great?

Not as great as I thought. I found a car called the 2008 Honda Civic GX. Fully loaded it costs the same as the Civic Hybrid. The difference is that this car is about 25% less costly to fuel than the Prius. Why? It runs on natural gas. The estimated cost per year to fuel this is $884. That makes it $8470 cheaper over 5 years to fuel than the Maxima.

I just got a Civic Si sedan. Best car I've ever owned. If BMW did front wheel drive, I can't imagine they could do all that much better than the Si.

Keeping it off the big cam on the highway, I expect mid-30s once the engine breaks completely in. I know more than one person getting over 40mpg in an EX.

At this moment, you could not, for any money, buy a new Civic hybrid or Prius. Toyota is 4 months behind.

Yeah Indy I posted about that car a while back. Only drawback is it is only available in California and I think somewhere on the East Coast. We won't be getting GX's.

The one in California is the hydrogen car.

Yeah, a non-hybrid civic would be my choice right now if I was buying a new car.

Why natural gas may not be for you
So why shouldn't you just rush out and buy one of these for yourself?

The first reason would be that you probably can't. The Civic GX is available for retail sale to the public in only two states, New York and California.

http://money.cnn.com/2007/01...tos/honda_civic_gx/index.htm

And here is well...This is current

Technically, the Civic GX is only available for fleet sales in Massachusetts, and is for sale to the general public in New York and California.

http://www.telegram.com/article/20080527/NEWS/805270361/1101

I also called the General sales manager at the main Honda Dealership in Dallas which is the BIGGEST dealership in the SW US, and they said the same thing. So unless you know something they don't and I can find, I will restate what I said and correct it and say I won't be getting one because they are NOT Available in almost all states but 3.

Well I won't be getting one because I can't afford it no matter where it is available for sale lol.

Its too early for natural gas. How about the new VW Diesel?

Failing that - if you want to most cost effective option - get yerself a second hand Geo Metro. Bucket cheap and 40 MPG :)

I've gotten about 5 on my Sentra. The wife's Escape showed no effect. I've been told that it "fools" the ECU into running lean, and doesn't do whatever the "scientist" claims it does (reducing surface tension, increase vaporization, etc). So cars with OBD1 computers see a nice gain, while OBD2 cars see little if anything. Computers are smarter and less easily fooled on OBD2 cars. Still, 5mpg is 5mpg however it's achieved.
