California Wildfire Burns 165 Structures

Quote From Source:
MEYERS, Calif. (AP) - A wind-driven forest fire burned out of control early Monday near the popular resort of Lake Tahoe, destroying at least 165 structures and forcing about 1,000 people to evacuate their homes.

The fire, believed to be caused by human activity, has scorched more than 2,000 acres - or more than 3 square miles - since it started Sunday afternoon. No injuries were reported.

The number of homes among the 165 burned structures was not immediately known, said Gay Eitel, an information assistant for the U.S. Forest Service.

I watched the Nascar race yesterday at Infineon and I have to say it looked dry. Everything was brown and dead. Doesnt appear to have rained out there in months.

It's ALWAYS dry in Sonoma this time of year. I've watched dozens of races there and never see any grass.

California Wildfire Burns 220 Homes

Quote From Source:
MEYERS, Calif. (AP) -- Firefighters launched an aggressive attack Monday to corral a raging forest fire that had destroyed at least 220 homes and forced about 1,000 people to evacuate near the popular Lake Tahoe resort area.

The fire, believed to be caused by human activity, had charred nearly 2,500 acres - nearly 4 square miles - near the south end of the lake since it started Sunday afternoon. No injuries were reported.

It was less than 10 percent contained Monday morning, said Lt. Kevin House of the El Dorado County Sheriff's Department.

Less than 10% contained....doesn't sound promising now does it?

We're having a lot of friction fires in the Metroplex.

A warehouse was burning down in Dallas as I switched trains.

Friction fires are caused by insurance forms rubbing together.

Emergency Declared for Lake Tahoe Area

Quote From Source:
MEYERS, Calif. (AP) - California officials declared a state of emergency Monday in the area near Lake Tahoe where firefighters battled a raging forest fire that has destroyed 225 buildings and forced the evacuation of hundreds more.

The disaster declaration makes portions of El Dorado County eligible for immediate state aid, and is the first step in requesting emergency federal assistance to fight the blaze, which rained ash on the pristine lake and darkened skies in the high Sierra.

"The circumstances of this wildfire, by reason of their magnitude, are beyond the control of the services, personnel, equipment and facilities of any single county," said Lt. Gov. John Garamendi, who signed the proclamation declaring the emergency Monday while Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was in Europe.

Resurgent Tahoe fire ignites chaos, panic

Quote From Source:
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — Firefighters battling the northernmost edge of the Angora fire ravaging the South Lake Tahoe area lost control of a back burn Tuesday afternoon, which jumped over Highway 89 and forced evacuations of several neighborhoods.

The Tahoe Basin's worst fire in a century bolted northeast into a subdivision about sixmiles southwest of the Stateline casinos, within a mile of the lake itself, sparking evacuations of a popular village and an enclave of pricey, waterfront homes. The marching flames ignited a scene of chaos as panicked residents waded through smoke while rushing home to meet loved ones, retrieve precious items or rescue pets.

"Everybody standing here right now better have a car and an escape plan, "a fire official shouted from the middle of an intersection as cars and people rushed by.

Nope, we are getting all the rain. Its dry as a tinderbox there. I did read somewhere it was 40% contained. They should just let it all burn down...then they won't have to worry about fighting it and there will be nothing to see...

Illegal Campfire Sparked Tahoe Blaze

Quote From Source:
Evacuated residents prepared to return to their burned-out streets as officials announced that an illegal campfire caused the inferno that destroyed more than 200 homes and charred 3,100 acres.

A U.S. Forest Service investigation found that the fire south of Lake Tahoe was built in a campfire-restricted area, but said there was no evidence it was deliberately set to spark the devastating wildfire that has displaced about 3,500 people.

Donna Deaton, an investigator for the U.S. Forest Service, said Friday the fire was built about a quarter-mile south of Seneca Pond, a popular recreation area south of Lake Tahoe. There were no suspects, she said.
