The size of the markings can be extremely misleading when you look at the size of the overall landmass. One mark for example may cover 2500 square miles of real estate yet the fire only covers 10 to 50 square miles. It makes the problem look worse than it is. Also there is no distinction between a fire that is 1 square mile in size and a fire that is 2500 square miles in size. There may be a thousand small fires burning that amount to no more than one of our big west coast wild fires but the map makes it look like half the continent is on fire.

One word ... FOOD. They are burning the forests to make room for farms and ranches. At least thats the official reason (perhaps half the reason).

When I was growing up my teachers talked about the rainforests being the "lungs of the planet" ... and now ... I'd say they have cancer ... human cancer.

Any bets as to Mom taking care of of the planet vs. feeding more humans?

We keep destroying the rain forest and we're going to have worse problems then no food.
