LED Lantern

I can't find a better way to provide emergency lighting than this LED Lantern.

http://shop.sportsmansguide....px?a=196421&kwtid=261072

It contains thirty long life LED lights and will provide up to 400 hours of light on a set of fully charged D batteries. It uses four D batteries and can operate with 15 or 30 lights. I am going to assume the 400 hours is with 15 lights active. 200 hours with 30 active is still great. You can easily keep a rotation of freshly charge D batteries going and have plenty of light with this.

See the Solar Battery Charger thread.

I have two LED lanterns for camping, they run forever. I left one running for a couple weeks straight.

If you put an LED lantern in a room like 10x10 or 12x12 would it give off enough light to be able to comfortably read a book by?

In a 10x10 or 12x12 room, yeah, I think you'd be able to read a book. I've used them in my VW bus and had enough light to read. They're not super bright, but they're just as bright as my old incandescent lantern and last much much much longer.

I've made candle lanterns before. If you put a reflector behind them they work pretty good. You can also make super candles out of paraffin, cardboard, and a tuna can. That works pretty good, but is really sooty, so I wouldn't use it inside.

Make your own LED flashlight.

I'd like to make a lantern large enough to light a room for daily purposes like cooking and cleaning.

I broke mine out for the camping trip this weekend, and tested it out. You can easily read a book, even in my large living room, in the bathroom, you can see everything. It has 4 D-Cells and lasts about 3 weeks straight.

Thats really cool. I think I am going to get me one. My kids love to play with flashlights and are always running the batteries out. This way it would be a bit larger of a project for them.

FYI, I only paid $10, but it was from a person selling them door to door. I've seen them for $10 at Warmart, but you'd have to find it in your soul to shop there, and I'm not sure how long those run for.

I think mine has 12 LED's and is not adjustable. Those look like better lanterns to be honest.
