Flood crisis grows as rivers rise

Quote From Source:
The flooding crisis in central and western England continues with thousands of homes losing water and electricity supplies.
Up to 350,000 people in Gloucestershire will be left without running water by Monday evening, as the Severn and Thames rivers threaten to overflow.

The Environment Agency said water levels on both rivers had exceeded those of devastating floods in 1947.

Humanitarian crisis as thousands face new evacuation alert

Quote From Source:
Britain's flood crisis deepened today as thousands of homeowners were issued with a new flood evacuation alert.

Fears were growing that rivers including the Thames and the Severn could burst their banks. The Thames in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, rose three feet in less than 12 hours today and with parts of the town already badly hit after the Ock burst its banks, householders were fearing the worst.

The Environment Agency warned people had to be ready to leave their homes if heavy rain continued. It came as figures showed this month is set to be the wettest July on record. The Met Office said some areas have already had twice as much rain as the July average of 6.2cm and there is a good chance that the record of 14.51cm, recorded in July 1988, would be surpassed.

Quote From Source:
Climate change may be culprit, said Tim Evans of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environment Management, adding that the situation matched predictions of how global warning would affect Britain.

Britain had one of its hottest and driest summers on record last year.

"What we now think of as extreme events will occur more often than in the past, and the extremes will get more extreme," Evans said.

10,000 homes flooded, 50,000 without power and 150,000 have no water

Quote From Source:
Servicemen and firefighters were battling to protect the electricity supplies of half a million people last night as the highest flood waters in memory continued to rise.

The Government announced an independent inquiry as water levels in the Thames and the Severn exceeded those of the devastating floods of 1947 and were forecast to rise to 20ft (6m) higher than normal.

More than 10,000 families have been left homeless in the West Country and Thames Valley over the past four days and thousands of others have been told to leave their homes as a mass of water surges down river. Electricity supplies to 50,000 homes have been cut and 150,000 homes have been left without water.

OMG it's The Climate Change.

I reckon it's all energy balance. The US has had a quite hurricane season because the other side of the Atlantic is being dumped on or vica versa.

Floods leave 350,000 without water

Quote From Source:
TEWKESBURY, England (AP) -- Emergency workers restored power to thousands of homes in western England Tuesday but 350,000 people were still without fresh water after the worst flooding in 60 years.

Water levels peaked on the River Thames in Oxford, but communities downstream were scrambling to prepare for surges in a few days' time.

"River levels have peaked and the level is now falling, but due to the current high volumes of water this is happening quite slowly," Gloucestershire Police spokesman Katy Roberts said.

Quote From Source:
It's official: the heavier rainfall in Britain is being caused by climate change, a major new scientific study will reveal this week, as the country reels from summer downpours of unprecedented ferocity.

The study's findings will be all the more dramatic for being disclosed as Britain struggles to recover from the phenomenal drenching of the past few days, during which more than a month's worth of rain fell in a few hours in some places, and floods forced thousands from their homes.

The Great Flood of July is all the more remarkable for following right on from the Great Flood of June, which caused similar havoc in northern towns such as Doncaster and Hull, after a similar series of astonishingly torrential downpours on 24 June.
