Major Winter Storm Sets Sights on D.C.
| Quote From Source: | The closing and cancellations are already starting to come in for Friday ahead of the potential blizzard that is expected to pound the Washington region early Friday through Saturday.
The National Weather Service has upgraded a winter storm watch to a winter storm warning from 10 a.m. Friday to 10 p.m. Saturday.
Because of the threat of severe winter weather, federal agencies will be open under an unscheduled leave policy. This means employees who cannot report for work may request unscheduled leave for their entire scheduled workday. Employees must notify their supervisors of their intent to take unscheduled leave. Emergency employees are expected to report for work on time.
Metro announced that if snow accumulations are 8 inches or higher, above-ground service will be suspended. Metro will then operate below ground service only.
Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell already has declared a state of emergency in advance of a winter storm Wednesday's declaration authorizes state agencies to assist local governments responding to a storm that could bring high winds and up to 20 inches of snow to the northern and western parts of the state. McDonnell said road crews and the Virginia National Guard are prepared to respond, and urged residents to do the same.

'Snowmageddon'
| Quote From Source: | Mid-Atlantic residents were buried Saturday from a likely record-setting blizzard the president jokingly dubbed "Snowmageddon," and those brave enough tried to clear a path through the wet, heavy mounds of thigh-high snow.
The snow was falling too quickly in the nation's capital for crews to keep up, and officials begged residents to stay home and out of the way so that roads might be cleared in time for everyone to return to work Monday. The usually traffic-snarled roads were mostly barren, and Washington's familiar sites and monuments were covered with nearly 2 feet of snow.
The storm toppled trees and knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of customers in Washington, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The situation was the same in West Virginia, where some 400 National Guard troops were helping with snow removal.
The snow comes less than two months after a Dec. 19 storm dumped more than 16 inches on Washington. Snowfalls of this magnitude let alone two in one season are rare in the area. According to the National Weather Service, Washington has gotten more than a foot of snow only 13 times since 1870.

Next storm system begins to take shape
| Quote From Source: | As the Mid-Atlantic cleans up from the historic snowstorm of the last couple of days, a new system that could bring additional snow to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast by midweek will begin to take shape over the next couple of days in the Central U.S. That midweek system will start off today as two separate systems: one diving south out of Canada, and the other heading into the Southern Plains out of the Four Corners.
The cold front heading into the Upper Midwest will bring some locally heavy snow and gusty winds at times to the Upper Mississippi Valley today and tonight. Gusty winds can be expected behind the front as cold air begins to move in, which could blow any fallen snow around in parts of the Dakotas and Minnesota. Dangerously cold wind chills are possible in parts of the Dakotas and eastern Montana by this evening.
To the south, an upper level trough moving through the Four Corners will bring some locally heavy rain and mountain snow to much of Arizona and New Mexico and southern sections of Utah and Colorado today and tonight before heading into the Plains. Rain and snow will pick up later today into tonight in Kansas, Oklahoma, and northern Texas, continuing into tomorrow.

Historic Storm Pummels Delaware Valley
| Quote From Source: | A major winter storm is hammered the tri-state and dumped up to 30-inches of snow in parts of the region before moving out late Saturday night.
The storm is officially the biggest February snowfall on record for Philadelphia, and the second biggest snowstorm for the city --- 28.5" and counting.
Mayor Nutter declared a snow emergency in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Governor Edward Rendell declared a statewide disaster emergency and Governor Jack Markell placed Delaware under a state of emergency.
Officials are urging all non-essential and non-emergency traffic to stay off the roads.

This latest combination of low pressure systems is expected to merge in my region. The local news last night said blizzard warnings could be issued today possibly.

Federal agencies to close Monday after blizzard
| Quote From Source: | The federal government announced it would remain closed on Monday and most schools planned to shut down as residents of the mid-Atlantic struggled to dig out from a blizzard that dumped two feet of snow on the region.
As officials worked to clear snow-covered streets, weather forecasters warned another storm would arrive by Tuesday, bringing as much as 12 more inches of snow to the mid-Atlantic region between Washington and New York.
The worst winter storm to hit the Washington area in decades shut down the area's three major airports for much of the day on Sunday. Bus service was halted and the region's subway ran trains only on the underground portion of the system.

Snow misery continues
| Quote From Source: | Some parts of Washington experienced up to 32in (81cm) of snow, one of the heaviest snowfalls in decades.
A record 3ft (91cm) of snow fell in Maryland.
Washington DC, Virginia and Maryland have declared emergencies, allowing them to mobilise the National Guard to help cope with the wintry onslaught.
Electricity was cut to at least 300,000 homes as the snow felled trees, and cut power lines across the region. Emergency workers are struggling to restore power.
Another 250,000 customers were hit by blackouts in Pennsylvania and New Jersey...

New Snowstorm, Now in the Midwest, to Hit DC to Boston
| Quote From Source: | A new snowstorm bringing the Plains and Midwest snow now will not miss New York City and southern New England and will hit areas from Washington, D.C. to Philadelphia again.
The new storm is part of a duo of snowstorms this week that will touch the lives of over half the people of the nation.
The new northern storm will affect much more real estate than the last with "plowable" snow.
Unfortunately this will be a colder storm than the last delivering a snow that is much more subject to blowing and drifting for a longer period of time.
There is the potential for a foot of snow or more from Washington, D.C. to Boston, Mass.

U.S. Mid-Atlantic Cleans Up From Snow; More Coming
| Quote From Source: | Baltimore, Washington and Philadelphia began digging out today from a blizzard that dumped as much as three feet of snow on parts of the mid-Atlantic region and left thousands without power.
Elkridge, Maryland, just south of Baltimore, recorded the region's most snowfall with 38.3 inches (97 centimeters), the National Weather Service said. Baltimore's airport had 24.8 inches, while Washington's Reagan National had 17.8 inches, its second-biggest snowfall total. Philadelphia registered 28.5 inches, its second-biggest snowfall also. In the Virginia town of Howellsville, west of Washington, 37 inches fell.
This was an epic storm, said Andrew Ulrich, a meteorologist for AccuWeather.com Inc. in State College, Pennsylvania. The sheer amount of snow was amazing.
And there is more in store.

Another major storm headed to snowy Mid-Atlantic
| Quote From Source: | A second major snow storm in less than a week was blowing Tuesday toward the Mid-Atlantic region, where plows still hadn't touched some roads, utility workers were struggling to restore power and shovels were in short supply.
The storm hit the Midwest early Tuesday, closing schools and greeting commuters with slick, slushy roads from Indianapolis to Chicago. Powerful wind and snow were expected to crawl into Mid-Atlantic states by the afternoon, and could leave as much as 20 inches of new snow in Washington and 18 inches near Philadelphia a Northeast travel hub by Wednesday night.
Parts of the region were already buried under nearly 3 feet of snow.

| Quote From Source: | Snow, wind and slush hounded eastern commuters Wednesday as blizzard warnings from Baltimore to New York City heralded the second major storm in a region already blanketed by historic weekend snowfalls
More than 10 inches of new snow fell before dawn in parts of Maryland that had received up to 30 inches just a few days earlier. Plows and salt spreaders fought heavy snow in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, where the flakes briefly turned to rain to make a slushy mix.
Plows have been rolling around the clock for days in the nation's capital, Philadelphia and Baltimore after nearly 3 feet of snow fell in some areas last weekend and they won't be stopping anytime soon.
Thousands remained without power from the last storm in parts of western Pennsylvania, Maryland and other areas. Utilities said deep snow was hindering some crews trying to fix damaged power lines even before Tuesday's storm arrived.
Their task could grow even more difficult with new snowfall and winds gusting up to 50 mph that create blizzard conditions in the Mid-Atlantic.

Enough already: Snow breaks mid-Atlantic records
| Quote From Source: | Worst winter ever? The second blizzard in less than a week buried the most populous stretch of the East Coast under nearly a foot of snow Wednesday, breaking records for the snowiest winter and demoralizing millions of people still trying to dig out from the previous storm.
Conditions in the nation's capital were so bad that even plows were advised to get off the roads, and forecasters were eyeing a third storm that could be brewing for next week.
For many families, the first storm was a fun weekend diversion. People even went skiing past Washington's monuments. But Wednesday's blizzard quickly became a serious safety concern. The Pennsylvania governor shut down some highways and warned that people who drove were risking their lives.
"I've seen enough," said Bill Daly, 57, as gusts of wind and snow lashed his face in Arlington, Va., where streets were nearly empty just a few days after people had been playing in the snow.
