The Edit Button Killed a Thread

Well, I was looking at an old thread of mine. The "Surtsey" thread in "Underwater volcano-something". I noticed some text written with "" instead of using quote tags and I just wanted to add the tags to make it look nicer. I had three posts in that thread and no replies.

But here is the bug:
When I edited the first post in that thread and added quote tags on a section, then all three posts in that thread were edited at the same time! I tried at first to clean up the mess but impossible. Every time I edited something in any of the posts, then all three posts were edited simultanously. In frustration I ended up killing the whole thread, sorry about that.

R.I.P Surtsey-thread. Google "Surtsey" to find stories, sites about it and pictures. :)

I have no idea what you are talking about. What do you mean they were all edited at the same time? can you be more specific? Also I think if you delete the first post in the thread all the rest will go.

When I edited the first post in the thread, everything was normal up to the point when I hit the submit button. Then after the button had been hit to submit the changes, I noticed that all three posts in the thread had been changed. All three posts having the same text as the new edited text I submitted to the first post, it was very strange. The three posts had different attached images to them. Only the attached images stayed the same, and was the only way to tell the three posts apart from each other. Some kind of bug caused just the text-part to be edited in all three posts but the attached images was left untouched.

After I noticed I could not make the old posts come back, then I deleted the first post in the thread. Causing the thread itself to be deleted as expected. But at that point I did it on purpose because the thread was already destroyed. Itīs not a big deal but this bug should be noticed, because itīs a dangerous bug. Careful if youīre editing old posts. Unexpected stuff might happen to the other posts of yours in that same thread (at least if the posts are on the same page)...

I don't know what kind of problem you ran in to. I've tried to duplicate what happened to you and it doesn't work. I've changed my user access to match yours and I still can't duplicate it. I've checked the code and there is one line that edits text in a message and it updates the db based on post id only. There is no physical way for a single edit to update the text of more than 1 post.

Thatīs strange cause I know it happened. I donīt know if it is significant but all the three posts in that thread were really old. The thread was among the first threads Iīve made here. And it was the very first thread in the Underwater Volcano forum. After editing post number one to add quote tags, then all three posts got the exact same text (the attached pictures were left untouched). When I tried to edit post number two in that thread in order to clean up the mess caused by editing post one, then post 1 and three got the exact same text as the new post number two. An "evil spiral". Maybe it was a one time event? I hope we donīt loose any more threads. Iīm gonna leave the rest of my posts unedited. The reason I tried to edit in a thread at all was just cosmetic anyway... :bald:
