| In the year since the Sumatran earthquake sent a Southwest Virginia well sloshing, the well has gained an international reputation for its oscillating antics. The Christiansburg well, whose splish-splashing last December has intrigued scientists from Virginia as well as Oregon, Florida and India, came to statewide attention in 1985 when it recorded a 7-foot fluctuation after a magnitude 8 temblor struck Mexico City.(Potomacnews)

| Guatemala's Volcano of Fire erupted on Tuesday, sending rivers of lava down its slopes and a huge cloud of ash and smoke into the sky. About 25,000 local residents were put on alert.
