Oregon's Enhanced Hazard Mitigation Plan Pays Off (View Original Story)

SALEM, Ore. -- Oregon is among the first of states to receive the larger 20% hazard mitigation grant allowed under FEMA’s Enhanced Hazard Mitigation Plan program. The approval of Oregon’s Plan allowed Oregon’s grant to rise from 7.5% to 20%, providing a greater allotment to implement Oregon’s mitigation program.

Hazard mitigation is any sustained action taken to reduce or eliminate long-term risk to people and property from natural hazards and their effects. Hazard mitigation planning is an important aspect of a successful mitigation program.

BILOXI, Miss. --Kendrick Walker, a Jackson State University senior physics major from Newton, Miss. visited the Gulf Coast last September shortly after Hurricane Katrina hit. When he returned with fellow students on a spring break trip he said he finally understood just how long and difficult the recovery would be. He said his immediate reaction "was that of disbelief and heart-felt sympathy. I came down to help and simply assumed that there would have been more (recovery) progress by now."

BILOXI, Miss. -- Many resources provided by a number of private, state and federal agencies are available to assist the elderly and special needs population in Mississippi who are still recovering from Hurricane Katrina. Some resources are available by filing an application for disaster assistance with the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Other resources are available through referrals from participating partners such as the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) or by contacting the agencies directly.
