Ship logs record Earth's magnetism (View Original Story)
Source: Posted: 07-04-2006 at 03:00:30
Anyone who has watched a needle spin around a compass, or the colorful northern lights grace the skies near Earth’s poles, has seen the effects of Earth’s magnetic field. Researchers do not fully understand, however, the processes governing the field’s behavior. New information gleaned from old ships’ logs is now leading to a better understanding of the magnetic field’s past strength, which is turning out to be more erratic than some scientists previously thought.(Geotimes)

Earth soaks up seawater (View Original Story)
Source: Posted: 07-04-2006 at 03:00:30
Geologists have long thought that seawater does not travel very far through Earth’s interior, stopped by an invisible heat and pressure barrier that recycles it back up through the crust. A new study, however, is challenging that notion, saying that traces of seawater exist deep inside the planet.(Geotimes)

Confirming a Chinese earthquake prediction (View Original Story)

For nearly three decades after Chinese officials predicted the powerful earthquake that hit Haicheng in the north of China on Feb. 4, 1975, details of their prediction process remained closely guarded. But now, after gaining access to formerly classified documents and key people involved with the process, a team of scientists has reconstructed this important event and concluded that earthquake prediction, though challenging, is not impossible, at least for some earthquakes.(Geotimes)

Climate change could cause earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, scientists say (View Original Story)
Source: Posted: 07-04-2006 at 03:00:30
A number of geologists say glacial melting due to climate change will unleash pent-up pressures in the Earth's crust, causing extreme geological events such as earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions.(K-litefm)
