NOAA Assists NASA Mars Mission; Space Environment Center Keeps Close Watch for Solar Storms (View Original Story)
Source: Posted: 03-03-2006 at 12:00:25
The NOAA Space Environment Center, home to the nation's early warning system for solar storms, is assisting NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Mission as the satellite approaches its critical orbit insertion phase. The SEC is providing daily briefings to the NASA MRO Mission Operations Assurance Group as well as providing appropriate warnings and alerts of space weather. "This operation presents some significant challenges," said Joe Kunches, chief of the NOAA Space Environment Center?s forecast and analysis branch. "The greatest issue is the fact that Mars is a long way from Earth, but more importantly, Mars is facing a different part of the sun than we Earthlings."

NOAA Removes Goliath Grouper from Species of Concern List Harvesting Still Prohibited (View Original Story)
Source: Posted: 03-03-2006 at 12:00:25
The NOAA Fisheries Service removed goliath grouper (formerly known as jewfish) from the species of concern list in early February because a recent status report showed a significant increase in abundance to the U.S. population segment. The report also showed the species is re-establishing throughout its historical range. These positive enhancements are the results of protective management measures established over a decade ago by state and federal agencies. In spite of this information, the stock is still considered to be overfished under the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act. Therefore, all recreational and commercial harvest is still prohibited.
