For the first time, an REpower type 5M wind turbine has been set up on the open sea. In the Scottish North Sea, in the Moray Firth, the first of a total of two turbines for the "Beatrice" demonstrator wind farm has just been set up on a lattice-like jacket structure, piled to the seabed at a depth of 44 meters. Never before have wind turbines been set up in water this deep, according to the company.

Texas retail electric provider Direct Energy signed a 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Arlington, Virginia-based AES Corporation's (AES) Buffalo Gap Wind Farm 2 to purchase the output and associated renewable energy credits (RECs) from the 233 megawatt (MW) project currently under construction by AES near Abilene, Texas.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has closed a deal making it the first federal agency to purchase renewable energy, or "green power," equivalent to 100 percent of its annual electricity needs. The agency signed a contract with 3 Phases Energy Services to purchase more than 100 million kilowatt hours (kWh) in renewable energy certificates, effective Sept. 1. The arrangement extends annual green-power purchases to more than 190 EPA facilities nationwide.
