WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Thousands of residents displaced by the 2005 Gulf Coast hurricanes are continuing to have their rent paid through a new government initiative, the Disaster Housing Assistance Program, which is being administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) on behalf of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

PEARL, Miss. -- Open houses are scheduled Dec.11-13 for residents of Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties to see the new preliminary flood maps, known as the Digital Flood Insurance Maps (DFIRMs). This will kick off the official public comment period, which is part of the process to adopt the maps to meet requirements of the National Flood Insurance Program.
