A controversial land swap proposal could open portions of an Alaska wildlife refuge to oil drilling, dividing Alaska natives and stoking opposition from environmentalists.

For our upcoming piece on the monuments at night and the logic behind their illumination. Pictured, the "big three", Lincoln, Washington, and the Capitol, as seen at dusk from across the Potomac river. The warm white glow of the Capitol dome may soon go green, part of an effort by Democratic congressional leaders to save energy and modernize the District's nocturnal landscape. But like so many issues on Capitol Hill , the plan has ignited partisan bickering.

Cars and trucks share the road on the southbound Interstate 5, near the Newhall Pass between Santa Clarita and Los Angeles Monday, Oct. 15, 2007. Traffic was moving smoothly Monday as transportation officials reopened Interstate 5 after a fatal, fiery tunnel crash closed the freeway over the weekend. All main lanes on both sides of the freeway were open, while the truck tunnel where Friday's deadly crash occurred remained closed. The tunnel is a truck bypass that runs beneath eight lanes of I-5, the main West Coast interstate, linking Mexico and Canada. It is also a major route from Los Angeles to the city's northern suburbs. (AP Photo/Damian Dovarganes)Seventeen states on Wednesday sued the Bush administration to force it to comply with a Supreme Court ruling that rebuked what justices called inaction on global warming.

WASHINGTON - APRIL 02: U.S. Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Chairman Barbara Boxer (D-CA) questions witnesses during a hearing about the possible listing of the polar bear under the Endangered Species Act April 2, 2008 in Washington, DC. U.S. Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne was invited to testify but declined until he said he could provide more information regarding the listing of the polar bear as endangered. According to conservation groups, polar bears are threatened because their habitat, sea ice, is shrinking from global warming. The Senate environment committee met Wednesday to hear why the Bush administration has yet to decide whether to list polar bears as threatened, but its star witness failed to show.
