HEY CNN ACTUALLY WROTE THIS ONE UP!!

Quote From Source:
CNN) -- A strong earthquake early Saturday has jolted Indonesia's eastern Sulawesi region, an area located more than 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) from the region most devastated by last year's tsunami disaster.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude 6.5 quake struck about 65 kilometers (40 miles) west of Baubau on the coastal southeastern edge of the island of Sulawesi.

The quake could cause local damage and flooding, but nothing on the scale of the tsunami disaster, said Don Blakeman, a geophysicist with the USGS's National Earthquake Information Center.

Quote From Source:

Feb. 27 (Bloomberg) -- An aftershock with a magnitude of 6.7 struck Indonesia's Simeulue island off the coast of Sumatra, near the epicenter of December's massive earthquake, the U.S. Geological Survey said. There were no reports of damage.

The quake, the second-biggest aftershock since the Dec. 26 temblor and tsunami that left 290,000 people dead or missing in 12 countries, occurred at 7:56 p.m. yesterday, Jakarta time, about 1,590 kilometers (985 miles) from the Indonesian capital, the U.S. seismological agency said on its Web site. The temblor occurred at a depth of 30 kilometers.

The quake sparked panic among people in towns along the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia's Antara news agency reported, citing its own correspondent. People in Simeulue were still on higher ground as late as 2 a.m. today, fearing a tsunami, the report said. None was reported.

ya know what I mean?

Indy - 2/27/2005 at 17:06

I completely agree. Though technically they are called that for 90 days I believe. From what I've seen in the past it seems as if you get the big event and the aftershocks that follow get progressively weaker and fewer and farther in between. This just doesn't seem to be the case here.

The geologist who warned in July that Indonesia was due for a major quake says that only the northernmost portion of the boundary where the two tectonic plates meet ruptured in December. "The fact that most of the other part of the section has generated few great earthquakes in more than a hundred years is worrisome ... other parts within the section of this fault should be considered dangerous over the next few decades...I have no doubt that within the next centurywe'll have million-person losses, caused by natural disasters in the developing world. There will be hundreds of thousands more deaths in the next 10 to 15 years because of earthquakes alone."

Quote From Source:
A build-up of stress on faults in Sumatra following the Indonesian earthquake is likely to trigger another large quake and perhaps a tsunami.

That is the claim made in Nature by a team from the University of Ulster.

The slip that caused last year's devastating quake placed increased stress on the Sumatran fault and on the adjacent undersea Sunda Trench.

The 2004 earthquake occurred when the deep, flat Indian plate slipped under the Burma plate.

Quote From Source:
LONDON, England (AP) -- A buildup of stress on faults in Sumatra is likely to trigger another large earthquake -- and potentially another tsunami -- in the Indian Ocean region, seismologists say.

Researchers at the University of Ulster-Coleraine in Northern Ireland report in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature that stress is building not only in the Sumatra fault, where the magnitude 9.0 quake struck December 26, but also on the adjacent fault zone known as the Sunda Trench, located under the sea west of Sumatra.

Another rupture could trigger a magnitude 7-7.5 quake on either fault. That would be a significant quake, but far less powerful than the one that unleashed a tsunami that left an estimated 300,000 people dead or missing.

HONG KONG (AP) - Several earthquakes shook Indonesia over a 24-hour period, including two that rattled a region hit last week by a quake that killed more than 600 people, seismologists said Friday. No damage or injuries were immediately reported.

The first quake to jolt the area around Nias Island - devastated by the 8.7-magnitude quake on March 28 - struck late Thursday and had a magnitude of 5.6, said U.S. Geological Survey seismologists. The second quake of magnitude 5.0 happened about five hours later, the survey said.

A weaker quake was reported near Simeulue, an island group off the Sumatra's west coast that was also hit hard by the March 28 quake, the survey said. The tremor had a magnitude of 4.9, the survey said.

Dan.... I hate to say it but I think the shallow quakes are the ones of concern. They were starting at 30km deep and running consistant. Now they are getting a little more shallow. The first thing that comes to my mind is magma making moves closer to the surface. It has alot of rock to break. I can't see anything good about shallow quakes. Really deep quakes don't conern me much. Its the shallow ones I would keep an eye out on.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Nope, there where roughly 10,000 more total earthquakes in 2003 and 2004 then there were from 1990-1999. Then starting in 2000, the total number started ramping up.

http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0197840.htm

2002 started a dramatic increase in the total number of quakes, including those in the US.

http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/eqlists/eqstats.html

We are on track to reduce the total number this year to roughly 24,000-25,000 total quakes, wich is stil a significant jump from the last decade, but down from the three previous years with a total of 12,359 as of June 02, 2005.

This all may be due to the amount of stations that are now able to detect earthquakes. In 1931 there where only 350 seismological centers, and that total is now around 8000. So It may be that the total number of earthquakes has not gone up, but the fact we are just able to detect more of them (many of them previously undetectable), makes it seem the numbers have risen. The number of major and great earthquakes has remained pretty stable throughout the years. Only way to really tell if the total per year number has increased, is to put another decade or so behind us with all the new technology in place. Then we will see if the numbers increase or remain roughly between 24k-31k per year.

Tearful parents searched for missing children Tuesday, and soldiers dug through the debris of homes flattened by the second tsunami to hit Indonesia in as many years. Well over 300 people were killed and more than 160 others were missing.

The waves tossed fishing boats 100 yards inland and turned the resort's main street into a tangled junkyard of busted buildings, cars and furniture. Bodies were piled in temporary morgues.

"I don't mind losing any of my property, but please God return my son," said Basril, a villager who goes by one name, as he and his wife searched though the debris piled up on Java island's southern coast.

I hate how the 'media' always includes those sad tales, in the Yahoo article I linked above, theres one about a guy losing his wife after being carried 300 yards inland by the wave...

I hope that area calms down, but I doubt it will.

FatalWishes - 7/18/2006 at 12:35

And I thought they had state of the art warning systems in place at this point????????

Quote From Source:
PANGANDARAN, Indonesia (Reuters) - The death toll from a tsunami that smashed into fishing villages and resorts on Indonesia's Java island has crossed 340, and over 200 more people are missing, officials said on Tuesday.

At least four non-Indonesians were among the dead and 54,000 people were displaced, they said.

No warnings had been reported ahead of the waves, which struck on Monday afternoon, despite regional efforts to establish early warning systems after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that left 230,000 killed or missing, including 170,000 in Indonesia.

Quote From Source:
Officials in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, failed to issue a tsunami warning despite receiving data about Monday's earthquake 20 minutes before the first wave struck the island of Java.

One official told the Guardian they were too busy monitoring the aftershocks of the 7.7-magnitude quake that triggered the tsunami to raise the alarm. The government's science and technology minister, Kusmayanto Kadiman, confirmed last night that Indonesia had received bulletins from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii and Japan's meteorological agency after the quake, but "we did not announce them".

Quote From Source:
JAKARTA, Indonesia -- An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.3 shook buildings for several minutes in northeastern Indonesia Sunday and caused minor damage, the U.S. Geological Survey and witnesses said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or a tsunami after the underwater tremor off the eastern coast of Sulawesi island.

Three people were slightly injured when a church was damaged in the regional capital, Manado, a witness told The Associated Press. And frightened residents on the islands of Maluku and Sulawesi ran in panic to higher ground.

JAKARTA (AFP) - At least 82 people were killed Tuesday and hundreds injured in a 6.3-magnitude earthquake that rocked Indonesia's Sumatra island, officials said.

The toll won't stop rising because the quake happened in a relatively populated region," said Damien Personnaz, a spokesman for children's agency UNICEF, who gave the figure of 82 dead.

Two UNICEF teams are in Sumatra monitoring the situation.

Hundreds of others were injured, Rosmini Savitri, an official in the disaster zone, told AFP by phone

What volcano is getting ready to blow? That's just way too much activity to just be a fault. That, what, 7 quakes 6.0 or greater in the last 2 days?!?!?

MattN - 9/14/2007 at 09:34

Four 8.0 or great quakes this year.

2007 magnitude 8 or greater earthquakes:

8.4 magnitude, Southern Sumatra, Sept. 12
8.0 magnitude, Near the coast of Central Peru, Aug. 15
8.1 magnitude, Solomon Islands, April 1
8.1 magnitude, East of the Kuril Islands, Jan. 13

California is due....

Quote From Source:
Toba caldera produced the largest eruption in the last 2 million years. The caldera is 18 x 60 miles (30 by 100 km) and has a total relief of 5,100 feet (1700 m). The caldera probably formed in stages. Large eruptions occurred 840,000, about 700,000, and 75,000 years ago. The eruption 75,000 years ago produced the Young Toba Tuff. The Young Toba Tuff was erupted from ring fractures that surround most or all of the present-day lake.

Quote From Source:
Kerry Sieh, from the California Institute of Technology, has spent decades studying the fault line that runs along Indonesia's seismically-charged western coast. He is one of several experts predicting a repeat of the massive earthquake that triggered the 2004 Asian tsunami, which killed more than 230,000 people in a dozen Indian Ocean nations.

"No one can say whether it will be in 30 seconds or 30 years," he said. "But what happened the other day, I think is quite possibly a sequence of smaller earthquakes leading up to the bigger one."

The fault, which runs the length of the west coast of Sumatra about 200 kilometers (125 miles) offshore, is the meeting point of the Eurasian and Pacific tectonic plates, which have been pushing against each other for millions of years, causing huge stresses to build up.

"There is a strong indication this foreshadows the big one," said Danny Hillman, an earthquake specialist at the Indonesian Institute of Science. "We all agree there is an 8.5 or stronger earthquake waiting to happen."

Quake hits Bali climate conference

Quote From Source:
BALI, Indonesia (AP) -- An earthquake on Friday rattled Indonesia's resort island of Bali, where thousands of people were gathering for a U.N. climate change conference. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The 5.4-magnitude tremor was centered 150 miles southwest of Bali, the U.S. Geological Survey said on its Web site. It struck around 6 miles beneath the ocean floor.

The quake could be felt in Bali, where more than 10,000 people were attending a two-week conference about rising global temperatures, which scientists say could lead to severe droughts and flooding, melting ice caps and rising seas, and the extinction of animals.

Quote From Source:
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) - A powerful earthquake struck western Indonesia on Wednesday, prompting tsunami warnings from international agencies. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damages.
The quake, which had a preliminary magnitude of 7.6, struck under the island of Simeulue off the western coast of Sumatra island, the U.S. Geological Survey said in a posting on its Web site.

Minutes after the quake hit, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a bulletin saying parts of the Sumatran coast closest to the epicenter were at risk of a possible tsunami. Japan's meteorological agency said India's Andaman and Nicobar island chain was also at risk.

Several callers told local radio station el-Shinta that the quake was felt strongly on Sumatra.
