:bs:

This wad o' 14mph clouds didn't even have time to jump off the coast of Africa before they nailed it down.

Indy - 7/3/2008 at 19:44

It is serious bullshit. Look at this image.

That is what they are calling a tropical storm. The earlier discussion identified TWO spiral bands. That is what they used to justify this. You can have two spiral bands but that doesn't mean you have a closed low which btw is a requirement for being called a tropical storm in addition to SUSTAINED winds of 39mph or greater.

This is absolutely BS. Prior to the mid 1990's they'd be saying this system was on the verge of being classified a tropical depression. The new NHC has set the bar so low that named storms mean absolutely nothing these days.

MattN - 7/4/2008 at 08:22

HOw inthe hell can they call this a tropical storm? 5 years ago it wouldn't have recieved a 2nd glance yet. This is rediculous.

Indy - 7/4/2008 at 14:29

Now I'd say maybe we have a depression.

I wonder if this is going to blow the Solar Flare Theory out of the water?

Watch this turn into a 200+ mph storm and nail Houston or something and drive gas prices past 8.00 a gallon. :scratchhead:

ghoster - 7/5/2008 at 09:41

Ka Ching!! Good news for the oil companies, except for the repair if they do any of the rigs in the gulf. Refineries could take a hit too, that would be bad for the country as it is. Natural disasters will reinforce the already bad economy, and make things more expensive and actually scarce. Damn this is not good if it makes a hit in the gulf, but a hit on the east coast isn't going to be a picnic either. Nope this is just the first in a series of these, watching another slow motion disaster is not fun.

Aerology - 7/5/2008 at 14:28

Jupiter will be straight out from the Sun in line with the Earth on the 9th of July, it is this planetary effect that is driving the blow up of equatorial moisture presenting it self as Bertha, and also the surge of moisture coming up thru Mexico, from the tropics.

The convection will build up till the 9th, then increase in intensity, for three days as the moisture rains out in a surge of storm strength as the air mass sliding off of the Continental US meets it several hundred miles off shore, and starts the pushing of the storm toward Newfoundland the 12th thru 16th...

Just my ideas

I think this system is gonna go North. I couldn't grasp a US hit just yet in my forecast.

MountainManMike - 7/7/2008 at 03:25

my guess was north since this system formed.

Quote From Source:
MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- Bertha became the first hurricane of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season early Monday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

A satellite picture from 5:45 a.m. ET Monday shows Hurricane Bertha over the Atlantic.

Additional strengthening is expected during the next couple of days, according to forecasters.

The hurricane center said it is still too early to determine whether Bertha will eventually affect any land areas. The five-day forecast map shows Bertha passing near Bermuda, but hurricanes are unpredictable and their routes often change during a forecast period.
