(AP) - A pair of out-of-control wildfires roared along California's central coast Friday, chewing through opposite ends of a parched forest and threatening a total of more than 4,500 homes. While flames from the stubborn fire in the northern flank of the Los Padres National Forest inched closer to Big Sur's historic vacation retreats, firefighters farther south braced for the return of evening winds that a day earlier caused a wildfire in Santa Barbara County to double in size and race dangerously close to hundreds of homes. Residents of more than 1,700 homes in and around the city of Goleta were ordered to evacuate, joining an equal number of people who were told to leave Big Sur days earlier. |

Firefighters Evan Scott and Matt Luis monitor the Basin Complex Fire Monday in Monterey County, California. Authorities ordered thousands of residents in the town north of Sacramento to leave after erratic winds blew embers across wildfire containment lines, destroying 40 homes nearby, in the latest setback for already strained fire crews. Firefighters also were struggling against a sudden drop in humidity and a 10-degree spike in temperature as a heat wave forecast to linger until the weekend grips much of the state. "Right now we're battling the weather and the erratic winds," said Todd Simmons, a California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman. "Whatever the winds are doing, that's pretty much what the fire's going to do." |

thats crazy. theres not going to be much left to burn after this summer and the last summer.
i've been in orange county for the past few weeks (and will be for about 6 or 7 more), and it was misting today in the morning (7-8 am)...and pretty breezy with a temp around 60. Kinda reminded me of Oregon...my home town today got up to 93 around 4 or 5 PM. And here in Orange County, it only got up to about 72 with a dewpoint around 60...so it's a little sticky. And the skies are pretty much clear now.

| uly 10 (Bloomberg) -- California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said his state is approaching a ``tipping point'' in its battle against more than 300 wildfires and needs federal help to turn the tide. The state requires assistance, including from the military, after lightning sparked the blazes, which have been exacerbated by high temperatures and dry grass and brush, Schwarzenegger wrote in a letter sent to Republican President George W. Bush today. ``With more lightning storms forecast for later this week, we sit at a critical tipping point in California that requires immediate federal help and aggressive pre-positioning of federal resources,'' wrote Schwarzenegger, also a Republican. ``I respectfully request federal active duty forces.'' |
