A tropical storm bearing down on Florida formed in the Gulf of Mexico on Friday, just in time for the official June 1 start of the Atlantic hurricane season. Tropical storm Barry was bearing maximum sustained winds of about 45 miles per hour (75 kph) and heading north at about 12 mph (19 kph).
