Asbestos monitoring fell post-Katrina (AP)
Source: Posted: 07-01-2007 at 06:00:39

Jackson Square and the French Quarter remain dry in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in this Sept. 10, 2005 file photo in New Orleans. The government's repairs to New Orleans' hurricane-damaged levees may have had the unintended consequence of putting the French Quarter in greater danger than it was before Hurricane Katrina. Experts say the stronger levees and flood walls could funnel storm water into the cul-de-sac of the Industrial Canal, a waterway only 2 miles from Bourbon Street, and overwhelm the 12-foot concrete flood walls that shield some of the city's most cherished neighborhoods. (AP Photo/David J. Phillip, Pool, file)AP - A new congressional report says the Environmental Protection Agency potentially exposed scores of residents, volunteers and workers to asbestos fibers by not doing more to monitor the contaminant in the cleanup after Hurricane Katrina.
